Ukrainian Folk Art Folk a rt holds a cherished place in th e life of th e U krain ian people, fo r as a m an ifesta tion of a rich cultural heritage, it has served as a unifying force in periods of g re a te st national calam ity. The folk song, th e live ly folk dance,and th e colorful native w ear have become dear to th e h e a rt of every U krainian. F o r hundreds of thousands of FO LK A RT ALBUM In th e research done on U k rainian folk a rt women have shown g re a t in itiativ e in th e collection of em broidery designs. The firs t such collection was compiled by th e U krainian jo u r n alist and w riter, Olena Pchil- ka. T hrough h er effo rts th ere ap peared in 1872 an album of de signs “U krainian E m broidery,” w hich contained th e fav o rite de signs and em broidery p a tte rn s of various regions of U kraine. The album, w hich appeared over 90 years ago is today a veritable trea su re. It has served as a m o del for o th er sim ilar album s and has helped to fo ster a renew ed in te re st in U krainian folk art. Writer and ethnographer O. Pchilka 18 U krainians residing in th e F ree W orld, these cultural m anifes tatio n s have become sym bolic of th e ir beloved native land. In view of th e fa c t th a t th e creators of folk a r t are fo r th e m ost p a rt women, th e W orld F ederation of U krainian W om en's O rganizations (W FUW O) has form ed a special Com m ittee fo r th e preservation of folk cul tu re. The C hairm an of th e Com m ittee is M rs. A nna M aria Ba- ra n of Sasakatoon, Canada. To correlate th e C om m ittee’s w ork M rs. B aran organized a Folk A rt Commission, w hich is com prised of experts in th e field. T his Commission has prepared a w ork plan w hich calls fo r re search in th e field of U krainian folk a r t and fo r its cultivation by U krainian wom en’s organiza tions. U krainian women have achiev ed g re a t a rtis try in folk a rt — em broidery, w eaving, ceram ics, and E a ste r egg decorating. The Com mission has m ade special effo rts to compile m aterials on all these and to fu rth e r _ th is knowledge am ong U krainian women. The Com mission carries out its cam paign by organizing va rious exhibits and lectures. In October of 1963 a special Ses sion on ceram ics w as presented in Saskatoon. A t th e p resen t tim e th e Com mission is p re p ar ing a second Session on em broidered towels. To keep folk a r t on a high a rtistic level, th e Com mission has sponsored ad vice columns in various wom en’s m agazines. The columns p resen t th e views of recognized au th o rities on folk a r t who of fe r helpful suggestions to all inquiries. These colum ns have become very popular, and under consideration a t th e present tim e are inform ation centers on U krainian a rts and cra fts to be opened a t all larg er B ranches. W ith th is goal in m ind, extensive bibliographies of all m aterials dealing w ith U krainian folk a rt have been compiled. These will g reatly aid in th e b e tte r under standing of folk a rt techniques and th e ir application. All m em ber organizations of W FUW O have show n g re a t in iti ative in th is undertaking. The Ukrainian embroidery design U krainian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica, U krain ian Catholic W om en’s League of Canada, and th e U krainian W om en’s O rganization of G reat B ritain have compiled th e ir own collections of th is type. U N W LA will p resen t a Folk A rts and C rafts E x h ib it as p a rt of its Convention program in New Y ork City. The articles on exhi bit will be judged fo r original ity and craftsm anship, and prizes will be aw arded fo r win ning entries. UCWLC has recently spon sored an exhibit of em broidered children’s w ear in Edm onton, A lta, and th e W om an’s O rgani zation of C anada in W innipeg, Man. has published a book on native costum es and an album of em broidery designs. All these effo rts are only p a rt of th e program w hich has been undertaken by th e W FUW O to fo ster g re a te r in tere st in U k rain ian folk culture and to m ain tain it on a high degree of ex cellence.
