Report on the 74th Annual Convention of the General Federation of Women's Clubs N EW ORLEA N S, LA. JU N E 7-11, 1965 A n astasia V olker — D etroit The them e of th e convention was “Service fo r Freedom and G row th,” w h i ch perm eated th e delegates and guests atten d in g num bered approxim ately eleven hundred, and th e sp irit of good fellowship and S outhern hospi ta lity prevailed everyw here. The rep o rts of th e president, M rs. W illiam H. H asebroock, and th e 51 sta te presidents including th e D istrict of Columbia, w ere m ost illum inating. The collossal scope of com m unity w ork accom plished by th e wom en’s organiza tions was overw helm ing and one fe lt th e full im pact of its m ag nitude. Y our delegate gleaned considerable knowledge from th is experience as to procedure, order of th e convention, tim ing, and discipline. F or exam ple: th e resolutions w ere printed in ad vance in th e Convention Call, and adopted th e firs t day of th e sessions. R esolution No. 13 is w orthy of note fo r th e national ity groups fo r it dealt w ith th e M enace of Com munism . W e are g ra te fu l th a t th e convention w ent on record on th is score. Also, th e tim ing of th e speakers was adhered to and accepted graciously. The GFWC is to be com m end ed fo r th e selection of speakers and panelists. E ach one was ex p e rt in his or h er given field of in terest. The talks w ere m ost inform ative, inspiring, stim u lat ing, and captured th e im agina tion of th e audience. T his tim e we w ere privileged to re p o rt w ith th e In tern atio n al Clubs. The clubs rep o rtin g w ere fro m : th e B aham as, England, C osta Rica, G erm any, Guam, Is rael, L ithuania, Philippines, P u erto Rico, E stonia, th e B altic W om en’s Council, U krainian, N ational W om en’s League Greece, and th e W om en fo r F ree dom from New Y ork. E ach rep resen tativ e depicted th e w ork of h er organization, and your dele g ate w as honored to re p o rt on th e w ork of Soyuz U krainok both here and abroad. W e w ere also especially honored to capture th e in tere st of th e New Orleans press w hich published a picture of your delegate to g eth er w ith th a t of th e M ayor from th e Philippines. We are tru ly g ra te ful to have had th e opportunity to appear in an area w here too few of our people reside, and w here little is know n about U k raine and U krainians. Y our delegate w as also th e g uest of th e Oregon S tate F ed eration a t th e W estern S tates regional dinner, and is m ost ap preciative for th is honor to M rs. John S. Tyler, S tate P resident. W e had a b rief m om ent to ex change ideas on th e w ork of th e UNW LA and how it can cooper ate w ith th e federated clubs. My th an k s also go to M rs. Douglas A. Johnston, chairm an of th e Council of In tern atio n al Clubs, M rs. M. C loutm an of th e GFWC S taff, and to th e International hostess from D etroit, M rs Edw. N oth, fo r th e kindness and the courtesy th ey extended me. It was m y pleasure to m eet M rs. Lydia B alaban, form er chairm an of th e Chicago Re gional Council of th e UNW LA, who is now residing in New Or leans. W e prevailed upon h er to give h er im pressions and com m ents on th e luncheon w hich we attended, and she has prom ised to oblige us in th e n ex t issue of OUR L IF E . M rs. M ary D ush nyck reported on th e w ork of th e New Y ork organization of which she is a m em ber. In 1966, th e Diam ond Jubilee convention of th e GFWC will be held in Chicago.
