A nna Strokon, who is serving h er th ird term as P resi dent of D etro it B ranch 37 of th e UNW LA, was born in W innipeg in 1920, w here she spent her childhood. Here, in th is large center of U krainian life, she firs t began to tak e an active p a rt in com m unity life. She sang w ith th e “B oyan” C horus under th e direction of Rev. P. M ayevsky, and th e chorus directed by th e noted Prof. 0 . Koshetz. She ap peared in a num ber of U k rain ian th eatrical presentations, am ong these th e o p e re tta s: “N itch Pid Ivana K upala,” and S vatannia N a H oncharivtsi.” D uring th is tim e she also served as P resident of th e Young W om en’s A uxiliary of th e U krainian C hurch of St. M ary, th e P ro tect ress. Following h er m arriag e to W alter Strokon, M rs. A nna S tro kon moved to D etroit. H aving a degree in culinary arts, to g eth er w ith h er husband she opened a U krainian re sta u ra n t, th e S tar- exhibit of U krainian culture. They will surely add in tere st and attractiv en ess to your work. And v ariety pays. Editor light, a t 7511 M ichigan Avenue. The re sta u ran t, fam ous fo r its superb food, is a well-known landm ark of th e U krainian com m unity. M any m eetings of th e B ranch are held in th e cozy a t m osphere of th e “S ta rlig h t.” In th e near fu tu re, M rs. Strokon hopes to conduct a Sem inar in U krainian Cooking fo r th e bene fit of young hom em akers who w ish to learn the a r t of U krain ian cooking. F or th is purpose she will offer th e use of h er estab lishm ent. If th is u ndertaking proves successful, th e B ranch will expand th e course on a much larg er scale. M rs. Strokon has alw ays taken an active in tere st in com m unity affairs and has given m uch of h er tim e to such w orthw hile or ganizations, as th e A m erican Red Cross, th e Girl Scouts of Am erica, Old Folks convalescent hom es, and V eterans M em orial hospitals. Mr. and M rs. Strokon have one daughter, L aryssa, a senior a t Fordson H igh School, who is al so active in th e U krainian A m er ican com m unity and is interested in U krainian culture. OBITUARY M aria Cheryba, m em ber of B ranch 23 of U NW LA in D et roit, Mich., died on Jan u a ry 25, 1965. An active B ranch m em ber, she had occupied various posts, h er m ost recent being C hairm an of th e Building C om m ittee for th e UNW LA Home in D etroit. She had given a num ber of dem onstrations of U krainian E a ste r egg p ain ting fo r B ranch m em bers and th e invited public, and won prizes a t “P ask a” con tests (the paska is a U krainian E a ste r b read ). SPRINGTIME IN FASHION Well, here we are again facing th e b reath of springtim e in fa sh ion. This season — I’m sure you will be happy to know th a t your last years sprin g or fall ensem bles will still be very m uch in vogue. It seem s th a t fashions have stopped d rastic changing every six m onths. A little alter ing or co-ordinating can bring your last y ear’s w ardrobe up to date. Some of th e eye catchers th is season are: jersey fabrics used to m ake ju s t about ev ery th in g — from h ats to coats. M any ropes of pearls on slender necks. Jack ets are longer, m ore fitted w ith all kinds of pockets, bold checks cut often on th e bias — som etim es strip es on th e bias also. Mix and m atch sk irts and jack ets — sk irts are dark, jack ets are b rig h t, easy coats. Colors are navy, grey, black and w hite — besides th e usual pastel spring hues, sm all sw ingy sk irts, jack ets m ore su b stan tial b u t al ways so ft — sw eater-like, soft silk blouses underneath. Shiny belts appear often on su its and coats, th e tunic costum e pops up occasionally. S k irts are pleated or g ath ered w ith th e knee alw ays in view. H ats, com plem entary to th e costum es are often m atch ing, and th ere is a re tu rn of th e m ulticolored flow er bonnets. The total look th is sp rin g can be sum m ed up as a head to toe look of ease and com fort and elegance. O. L. S.
