Convention Year In November 1965 our X IV Convention w ill be held in New York city, m arking the 40th an niversary of our Organization. This im portant event w ill bring members fro m near and fa r. I t w ill have special significance fo r all American-born members of the U N W LA , whose mothers b u ilt the U krainian National Women’s League 40 years ago. I t was a d iffic u lt beginning. The women were newcomers, and they faced the d iffic u lt task of raising th e ir children, running th e ir homes, and earning a liv in g amid new and unfa m ilia r sur roundings. I t meant establishing new roots, learning new customs, and tackling new problems. When the depression came, many fam ilies suddenly found themselves w ith o u t a means of support. Undaunted, the women- pioneers faced the bleak fu tu re w ith hope and determination. A t a tim e when clubs and societies were being rapidly dissolved, the U krainian women of U N W L A struggled to keep th e ir Organiza tion alive, even as they support ed i t at other critica l times, un t il a new wave of im m igrants came to f i l l its ranks afte r W orld W ar II. These pioneer U N W L A mem bers can now view th e ir accom plishments w ith ju s tifia b le Spring again and once more hopes In the sad hearth germinate Once more I am lulled by dreams, Visions of a happier fate. Lesya U krainka pride. As we view in retrospect th e ir contributions to the devel opment and grow th of the U N W L A , we may ask ourselves what did we add th a t was new and indispensable to the U N W LA . Let us recall the f ir s t attempts of the U krainian National Wom en’s League to establish cultural contacts. I t was only a fte r nu merous e ffo rts th a t the U N W LA , a new and unknown or ganization, was granted permis sion to take p a rt in a fo lk a rt exhibit at the A storia Hotel in New Y o rk in 1926. Its success paved the way fo r other con tacts. A bold step forw ard was the U N W L A membership in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and in the National Coun cil of Women of the USA, achieved only afte r many months of discussions and con ferences. Today, contacts w ith women’s clubs of other n atio nality groups are maintained largely by Am er ican-born women of U krainian descent who represent the U N W L A in International Institu tes and N a tio n a lity Centers. This is now our main task in the U krainian National Women’s League. We, who are born and raised in this New World, under stand its m entality, and yet, be ing cu ltu ra lly linked w ith the land of our forefathers, we also understand the needs and s triv ings of the U krainian people. A ren’t we, therefore, qualified to play a special role in u n itin g the best of the old w ith th a t of the new? We m ust make every en deavor to serve as a lin k between the U N W L A and the world of American women. L e t us, therefore, look forw ard to the great moment of 1965. The Convention w ill gather all the members of the U N W L A and w ill present them w ith the op p o rtu n ity to express all th e ir wishes and strivings. Our repre sentatives, the American-born women of U krainian clescent should be among them.
