MALVINA LESHOCK IN PHILADELPHIA W e recen tly had th e p leasu re to hear a piano recita l in th e A cad em y o f S t. M iss L esh ock is a ctiv e in m u sical and academ ic circles, and is fa s t a ch iev in g rec ogn ition for her adm irable m u sician sh ip and th e sen sitiv ity of her in terp reta tio n s. M alvina L esh ock w as born in Sham okin, P a., situ a ted in th e colorfu l P ocono M ts. H er gran d fa th er, w ho cam e to th e U . S. from U k rain e in th e early p art of th is cen tu ry, w as one o f th e pio- n eer-found ers o f th e local U k rain ian C atholic p arish . T h e talen ted y o u n g p ian ist had an excep tion al train in g. Sh e stu d ied in B oston , at B arnard C ollege and C olum bia U n iv ersity in N ew Y ork C ity, and at th e U n iv ersity o f P en n sy lv a n ia in P hilad elp hia. S h e stu d ied form a l ly w ith Isid ore P hilipp , form er d irector o f th e P a ris C onserva toire, and each sum m er join ed th e M aster’s C lass o f P ierre M on teux as so lo ist and in ch am ber w orks. S h e g a v e p erform ances o f th e w orks o f th e B razil ian com poser V illa L obos, w ho p erson ally coached her in th e in terp reta tio n o f h is com p osition s. A con cert p resen ted in C arne g ie H all in 1960 b rou gh t M iss L esh ock th e acclaim o f th e p ress. A tou r o f E u rope follow ed in 1963, and in 1964 M alvina L esh ock took p art in a M usic F estiv a l in Spain. In add ition, M iss L esh ock w on nu m erous app earan ces w ith sym p h on y orch estras in P h ilad elp h ia, C hicago, and N ew Y ork. T h e talen ted p ia n ist is in ter ested in U k rain ian m u sic, and for her N ew Y ork debut included th ree w orks b y U k rain ian com p osers in to h er program . She w ish es to becom e b etter ac q u ainted w ith con tem p orary U k rain ian m u sic, and in th e near fu tu re sh e hop es to p resen t a special p rogram o f th is ty p e o f m u sic. W e m ay be ju stifia b ly proud o f th is talen ted y o u n g p ian ist, w ho h as w on such w id e acclaim and recogn ition fo r h er talen t from b oth A m erican and E u ro pean m u sic critics. UKRAINIAN DOCTOR WINS MEDICAL PROFESSORSHIP D r. L udm ila P ochyn ok, a U k rain ian p h y sicia n resid in g in C aracas, V enezu ela, recen tly w on out over a nu m b er o f appli can ts for th e p o sitio n o f P ro fes sor o f h isto lo g y and em b ryology at th e local u n iv ersity . B orn in K uban, in th e ea st ern region o f U k rain e, sh e em ig ra ted w ith her p aren ts to P ragu e, C zechoslovakia, w h ere sh e com pleted h er m edical stu d ies. H a v in g settled w ith her fa m ily in V enezu ela, sh e had to undergo an in ten siv e stu d y of th e S p an ish la n gu age in order to q u a lify for a m edical diplom a in th a t cou ntry. H er husband, a noted en gin eer, died in 1954. D r. P och yn ok is th e m oth er o f tw o d au gh ters — L uba, w ho is now com p letin g stu d ies o f ar ch itectu re, and D ana, w ho h as ju st com pleted h ig h school. A TALENTED SINGER E u g en ia M osgova, a U k rain ian-born sin g er w ho appeared in con certs in L v iv and th e cap ital cities o f E u rope in th e 1930’s and 1940’s, resid es at th e p resen t tim e in D enver, C olorado, w h ere sh e freq u en tly appears b efore w om en ’s clubs. G ifted w ith an u n u su ally fin e voice, sh e ap- appeared as a so lo ist w ith th e B elgrad O pera C om pany in Y u goslavia. M iss M osgova’s m o st recen t appearance w as in th e role of O darka in th e U k rain ian folk opera “Z aporozhetz Za D una- y em ,” w h ich w as p resen ted in C hicago.
