T he ch ild ren becom e m ore p ro ficien t in th e U k rain ian lan gu age, and even th o se fro m m ixed fam ilies, acquire a larger and m ore varied U k rain ian vocab ulary. A m elia B och ey, n ee Sy- w uliak, w as born in P h ilad elp h ia. M rs. B o ch ey ’s m oth er, M rs. A n n a S yw u liak is a lon g-tim e m em ber o f th e E x ecu tiv e B oard o f th e U k rain ian N a tio n al W om en ’s L eagu e o f A m erica, and is an H onorary P resid en t o f th e P h ilad elp h ia R egion al C ouncil of th e U N W L A . It is, th erefo re, n ot su rp risin g th a t th e y o u n g girl developed an in terest in com m u n ity and civic a ffa irs a t an early age. In 1940 M iss A m elia S yw u liak com pleted h ig h school and began w ork in an o ffice. F or a lo n g p e riod o f tim e sh e w as em ployed by P rovid en ce T ru st C om pany. In 1944 sh e m arried M r. Josep h B och ey. T h e couple w ere b lessed w ith seven ch ild ren : M ary A nne, M ichael, E llen, B arbara, Josep h, P h ilip , and P atricia. A lth o u g h sh e had h er han ds fu ll w ith such a la rg e fa m ily , M rs. B och ey al w a ys fou n d tim e to w ork a ctiv e ly in th e B ranch, w h ich sh e had join ed in 1944. S h e occupied v a riou s p o sts in U N W L A B ranch 52 and w as a lon g-tim e secretary o f th e B ranch. In 1964 M rs. B och ey w as elect ed P resid en t o f th e B ranch, w h ich had been form ed w ith th e help o f M rs. B o ch ey ’s m oth er, M rs. A . S yw u liak , and h er older sister, M rs. H elen S tra it. T he con scien tiou s execu tion o f her d u ties as P resid en t h a s earned M rs. B och ey th e love and resp ect o f all th e m em b ers o f B ranch 52.
