A ll th ese step s sig n ify an u n d erstan d in g and sup port o f th e p lig h t o f th e C aptive N ation s, and th e y h ave sp ecial m ean in g tod ay, w h en th e tren d appears to b e sh iftin g in th e d irection of co-existen ce. It is for th is reason th a t th e E x ecu tiv e B oard o f th e U k rain ian N a tio n al W om en ’s L eagu e o f A m erica d isp atch ed a letter to th e above-nam ed C on gress m en, th a n k in g th em fo r th eir sup port. T h e E x ecu tiv e B oard also appealed to all R egion al C ouncils o f th e U N W L A , as w ell as to all its B ran ch es to ack now l ed ge th e action s o f S en ator D irk sen and C on gressm en D u lsk i and F lood. C on gressm en supported C ongressm an F lood's resolu tion on th e C aptive N a tio n s C om m it tee, w h ile on th e b a sis o f C on g ressm a n D u lsk i’s reso lu tio n it h a s been su g g ested th a t th e Sh evch en k o M onum ent in th e N a tio n ’s C apital m a y becom e a verita b le b rid ge b etw een th e U n ited S ta tes and th e C aptive N ation s. T h e U k rain ian p ress recen tly b rou gh t us n ew s o f a n ew reso lu tion sponsored b y Sen ator D odd. T h e resolu tion u rges prom p t action b y th e S en ate to r a tify th e U .N . G enocide C on v en tio n and th ree oth er U .N . C onven tion s d ealin g w ith sla v ery, forced labor, and th e rig h ts o f w om en . S en ator D odd said th a t “our en tire m oral p osition , and our claim to lead ersh ip in th e fig h t fo r freed om and ju stice and h u m an decency, is p reju diced b y our failu re to r a tify ” th e se con ven tion s. Sen ator D odd’s sta tem en t w a s m ad e b e fo re th e C onference o f th e A d H oc C om m ittee on th e H um an R ig h ts and G enocide C onvention w h ich con vened in W ash in gton . It is im p era tiv e th a t w e reco g n ize th e im p ortan ce o f th is reso lu tion , and in th e form o f letters, ex p ress our g ra titu d e fo r th e un d ersta n d in g w h ich S en ator D odd h a s accorded it. O f sp ecial im portance for u s w om en, is th e C onven tion on W om en ’s R ig h ts. A lth o u g h th e q u estion o f w om en ’s rig h ts to g eth er w ith th e problem s o f gen ocid e and slave labor h a v e p rev io u sly been v ery unpopular su b jects fo r d iscu s sion , th e y are fin a lly com in g in to th e open and d eserve th e u t m o st con sid eration . It is th erefo re our d u ty to g iv e th ese m a tters carefu l a tten tion . B y w ritin g to th e S en ators and C ongressm en d irectly in volved w ith th e variou s resolu tion s, and also b y w ritin g to our sta te C on g ressm en let us sh ow our in ter e st in th ese m easu res w h ich hold g rea t valu e for th e en slaved peo p les o f U k rain e and all C aptive N a tio n s. Since, th en , sh e h a s b een a ctiv e in U k rain ian organ ized life, and esp ecially in th e w om en ’s m ovem en t. F or th e p a st fe w y ea rs sh e h as served as p res id en t o f B ranch 13 o f th e U N W L A in C hester, P a. H a v in g lo st th ree son s (on e died in S ib eria ), sh e liv es w ith h er m arried d au gh ter. M rs. M ychalin a C haikow ska, b. 1890, fir st b egan civic w ork in 1905.
