T he p ro g ra m co n sisted of re p o rts p re se n te d b y th e m em b ers of th e B oard , a g u e st sp ea k e r in th e p e rso n of A tto rn e y A u stin M. Lee, a m em b er of th e P e n n sy lv an ia S ta te le g isla tu re an d an in te re s tin g p ro g ra m w ith a U k ra in ia n th e m e c o m m em o ratin g th e 150th a n n iv e rs a ry of th e b ir th of T a ra s Shevchenko. P rio r to th e in tro d u c tio n of th e U k ra in ia n p e rfo rm e rs, M rs. S te p h an ie W ochok, w ho is C iti zenship C h a irm an on th e B oard, gave a b rie f o utlin e an d develop m e n t of th e U k ra in ia n N atio n al W om en’s L eague, u n d e rsc o rin g its a c tiv itie s. M iss Z irk a K olinko, a stu d e n t, m a jo rin g in E n g lish a t T em ple U n iv e rsity , spoke on th e b io g ra p h y o f th e g re a t B a rd o f U k ra in e , T a ra s S hevchenko an d in fo rm ed th e g ro u p of th e adop tio n of th e re so lu tio n fo r th e erectio n of a S h evchenko m o n u m e n t in th e N a tio n ’s C apital, w hich w ill be unveiled Ju n e 27, 1964. M rs. V eron ica C ehelsky, con c e rt soloist, w ho h a s ap p e a re d on telev isio n an d ra d io p ro g ra m s and w ho p re se n tly te a c h e s a t St. B asil’s School in P h ilad elp h ia, re n d e re d tw o m u sical selections by L y sen ko to th e w ords of S hev ch en k o ’s poem s. E v e ry v isito r voices a d m ira tio n fo r th e w ell ad m in is te re d H e a d q u a rte rs bu ilding. T h is w as n o t an easy achiev e m ent. O ur f ir s t H om e a t 909 N. F ra n k lin S t., in P h ila d e lp h ia w as o u r f ir s t ste p in th is directio n. P u rc h a se d in 1953 th e a p a rtm e n t house w as rem odeled in to an o f fice. To a cq u ire n e ce ssa ry fu n d s a m o rtg a g e loan w as ta k e n an d a c am p aig n to acq u ire $100 sh a re s w as s ta rte d . U N W L A C h ap te rs sig n ed fo r sh a re s of $3,700. Som e of th e m w ere recalled b u t m o st C h a p te rs tu rn e d th e m in to fo u n ders fu n d . O ur X II C onvention in 1959, in N ew Y o rk C ity, th e m o rtg a g e o f th e f ir s t h o u se w as b u rn ed . A lth o u g h ou r H om e w as now p aid fo r, alas it h a d to be to rn dow n b ecause of th e c ity ’s r e m odeling plan. A n o th e r b u ild in g m u st su b s titu te . So a rem ovable m em o rial p la te w as m ad e q u o t in g all C h a p te rs an d p erso n s w ho c o n trib u te d to ou r old bldg. I t is now placed in new H om e. A t th e dedicatio n of th e new H om e in 1962, th e p la te w as th e c e n te r of a tte n tio n . T h e p u rc h a sin g o f th e new H om e re q u ire d a new m o rtg a g e . T h e re fo re a new sh a re -sig n in g cam p aig n w as launched, w h ich b ro u g h t a nice re su lt. C h a p te rs 25, 26, 28, 33, 36, 42, 52, 59, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 72 acq u ired a lre a d y each a $100 s h a r e ; and C h a p te rs 43 an d 48 sig n ed even $200 each. T h is helped th e B oard to p a y a re m a rk a b le p a r t of th e m o rtg a g e loan. W ith th e help of m o re C h a p te rs o u r H om e can soon liq u id ate th e loan an d be b e tte r able to serv e th e p u rp o se of th e H e a d q u a rte rs. L. B.
