UNWLA Branch 78 Report On Sunday, January 19, the recently established Branch 78 (W ashington, D.C.) of the Uk rainian National Women’s League of America held its first social function. “Prosphora,” the traditional U krainian Christm as Eve dinner, was given by the members in the parish house of Holy Fam ily U krainian Catholic Church. The dinner was very well attended by members and friends of the League. The trad i tional dishes were tastefully pre pared by many of the ladies themselves. Mrs. Rose Siokalo, president, acted as m istress of ceremonies. Reverend Theodore Danusiar, pastor of Holy Fam ily Ukrainian Catholic Church, gave the invo cation. This was followed by the singing of perhaps the m ost fam ous of Ukrainian Christm as car ols, “Boh Predvichny.” The Prosphora was then distributed and shared with all present by Mrs. Olena Kanda. Throughout the evening, greetings were ex tended by members and guests. Mrs. Myroslawa Skaskiw spoke in U krainian on the beautiful customs and traditions surround ing a U krainian Christm as cele bration. For a brief moment, 9- year-old Peter Siokalo tran s form ed the dining room into a Ukrainian home as m any pres ent recalled the traditional strew ing of wheat w ith the words, “Sij sia, rodesia, zheto, corner to be helpful in suggest ing ways of applying U krainian peasant a rt in the modern home of today, although far removed from the source of its originality, but modified to lend itself to use fulness in every room of our home. If you are a woman who wants her home to be a source of pride and delight to her, you can spin your own artistic web, and make it very beautiful indeed. Your home is the backdrop for your life, w hether it be a villa or a room -apartm ent. It should be honestly your own — an expres sion of your own personality! pshenecia і vsiaka pashnycia,” which Peter so ably dem onstrat ed. Miss Nadia O’Shea spoke in English on the beauty and signi ficance of U krainian Christm as customs and traditions and the furthering and continuation of this inherited culture. Mrs. Ha- lyna W arvariw, in expressing her best wishes to all, stressed the importance of keeping alive U krainian traditions, especially through our young people. Greetings were extended on be half of numerous W ashington Branches of our organizations. Among them , Mr. Bohdan Skas kiw, UCCA; Dr. George Staro- solsky, O byednania; Dr. Theo dore Zalucky, Providence Associ ation; Mr. Vladimir Majewsky, Organization for the Defense of the Four Freedoms of U kraine; Mr. Ostap Zeniuk, Ukrainian W ar Veterans. The Very Rever end Meletius W ojnar and F ath er Stepan Kirzecky extended their blessings and best wishes to the group for continued success. The event was closed with a prayer by F ather Danusiar, after which all joined in singing the many beautiful U krainian Christm as carols. Later, F ath er W ojnar held an informal talk on his a t tendance at the Ecumenical Council in Rome, with a question and answer period following. The time, effort, culinary art, and participation by all, made this first endeavor a truly suc cessful one. It is hoped th a t this has been a beginning to a wider furtherance of educational, cul tural, and traditional contribu tions on the p art of the U krain ian woman on the American scene. Vera A. WOMEN IN POLITICS The D etroit Regional Council of UNWLA, in Detroit, Mich., arranged for a reception on Janu ary 30, 1964 for college girl stu dents of Ukrainian descent. The guest speaker was Councilwoman M ary Beck whose topic was “Wo men in Politics.” 20 Years of OUR LIFE The women’s magazine OUR LIFE, published by the U krain ian National Women’s League of America, Inc., is featuring its 20th anniversary. This event is m arked by numerous greetings of its readers as well as a popu larity campaign. Our Life is pub lished in Philadelphia, w ith Mrs. Lydia Burachynska as editor. WFUWO is specially interest ed in having its first publicity page in this magazine. Its new page of WFUWO News is includ ed in this issue. Ukrainian Dishes Poltava Cheese Pie (V atroushka) 3 cups of flour 7/s cups of butter One-third cup of confectioners sugar 3 yolks Уг grated lemond rind, vanilla Уг teaspoon of baking soda Mix the ingredients well, make dough and tran sfer to pie or cake tin. Bake at 350 degrees F until half done, add cheese filling. This is prepared by m ixing a li beral one-half pound of cottage cheese w ith one-eighth cup of b utter and about one-third cup of sugar.
