Coming IAW Congress This year International Alli ance Congress is to be held in Trieste, Italy from 19 to 31 Au gust. Member organizations, delegates, individual members are getting ready for the big event. As a m atter of fact, all women active in women’s move m ent are looking forw ard in ex pectation. One m ay ask why the inter national conferences are so im portant — and the answer to this question is not an easy one as one would expect. Obviously, there will be reporting on the work past, and plans for future. Counting of blessings and also of failures. There will be a gath ering of a group of active wom en from all over the world and m eeting of people and getting acquainted w ith the host coun try. However, the m ost im portant feature of every international conference is people — and it is people th a t count. All these women who through their hard work, diligence and m any a sac rifice built an organization th a t encourages every attem pt of women to gain their place in so cial, economic and political life, are in the focus of our attention. For, it would come as a surprise to many of us th a t even now, in this enlightened XX century women still have to fight for their rights to vote, for more favorable m arriage laws, for equal opportunities in education and work, for equal pay, for equal job. F ight w ith slavery — personal and national, is one of the m ost im portant tasks on hand. All these women are women of courage, conviction and knowl edge, and many worthwhile ven tures became a success owing the influence and pressure exerted by women’s organizations on th eir respective governm ents and public opinion. Through its numerous work shops held inbetween World Conferences, IAW teaches wom en about their rights and duties — leaders of member organiza tions gather throughout the world, in Denmark, England, Japan or Nigeria to exchange their views and to learn methods of work. Periodical regional con ferences are of great help in co ordination of various program s of the IAW. IAW is a vigorous organiza tion — there is still an influx of new member organizations and recently Womens’ Rights Move m ent of the Philippines became a new affiliate. Asian Region de velops admirably and already produced an outstanding presi dent — Mrs. Ezzlyn Deranyia- gala. African Region developing briskly, shows increased interest in works of the Alliance. Even in dividual members, usually float ing around the organization be came organized. The leadership of Alliance is young, energetic and experienc ed. It is m ost fortunate th at these young women are support ed, counseled and encouraged by an expert — Mrs. M argaret Cor- bet-Ashby, the past president of the IAW, who, now 80, seems to be possessed of the secret of the eternal youth. As a m atter of fact the past presidents, Hanna Rydh and E sther G raff do not hesitate to offer their help and advice in the interest of the Al liance. And, th a t’s why international conferences in general, and IAW Conference in particular, are im portant. There is much to be gained from personal contact w ith all of these brilliant women. It is an exchange of ideas, con stan t learning and constant give- and-take process. W ithout this personal relationship, w ithout close contact there is no life but vegetation. Our best wishes for every suc cess of the Conference are ad dressed to the two outstanding ladies — Mrs. M argaret Corbett- Ashby, our friend and patroness who has known us and our m oth ers for many, m any years (since 1923), and to the President of the IAW Mrs. Ezzlyn Deranyia- gala who has shown us her un- MARIE HALUN BLOCH When you look through lists of books for children in America you repeatedly see the name of Marie Halun Bloch. She is not a beginner. Her th irteen th book was published recently. Judging from the num ber of her publish ers her record is established and the books very popular. From the booklist you learn th a t Marie Halun Bloch is of U krainian descent. When you look through “Danny D offer” or “M ountains on the Move” you get the impression of a gifted pen with a perfect knowledge of the American child. It is true th a t you will find there certain features which are surprising in this hectic time. In developing the subject of the story she re veals a depth of feeling together w ith poised abil i ty. Thought is stressed rath er than action. The reason for each move is well ju s tified. In one of her last books, “Ma- (Continued on page 24) НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — 'БЕРЕЗЕНЬ, 1964 23 Marie Halun Bloch derstanding and cooperation on m any occasions. We shall not forget our fellow delegates — and we wish them success in the field of their pursuits and good health to w ithstand the gruelling conference agenda. Helen S. Prociuk, M.S.
