Our Platform A resume of an address delivered by Mrs. Irene Pawlykowska at W F U W O ’s European Conference, held on N ovem ber 14 ,- 17 , 1963 , in N ottingham , England. The WFUWO in the Free World was organized in Phila delphia in 1948 at a World Con gress of Ukrainian Women. This was during a very critical period in the Ukrainian fem inist move ment. Ukrainian women were g ran t ed equal franchise and political rights by the Ukrainian Nation al Republic in 1918. A t th a t tim e they also made contacts and be came members of international women’s organizations. The period between the two World W ars is noted for the tre mendous growth of women’s or- An Im portant Anniversary Ukrainian women’s organiza tions throughout the world are celebrating now the 40th anni versary of Olga Basarab, a social worker and underground fig h t er. Olga Basarab died 40 years ago in Lviv, Ukraine under to r tures of police organs for her faithful attitude towards the Ukrainian underground. Her name became a symbol of stabil ity and strength. ganizations in western Ukraine, membership of which included even the peasant women of the rural agricultural areas. In cen tral Ukraine under the Soviet oc cupation, organized fem inist movement had completely died out. Women’s organizations were not allowed to function nor to have any relationships beyond the borders. The second World W ar brought about complete destruction of the women’s organizations and their achievements of sixty years, for in 1944 Soviet troops occupied all of Ukraine and made it a p art of the USSR. The So viet regime suspended the activi ties of all women’s organizations, and as a result, a large number of the leading women found themselves as refugees in w est ern Europe, m any were deported and forced into hard labor in con centration camps, and m any oth ers, especially the young women, died in underground actions of the U krainian Insurgent Army. This placed the U krainian fem in ist movement in a very critical situation. In 1948 organizations of Uk rainian women in the Free World, U.S.A. and Canada, which at th a t tim e already had more than tw enty years of achievement behind them , called a Congress to Philadelphia at which delegates from Ukrainian women’s organizations of U.S.A., Canada, and Europe were pres ent. A t th a t tim e I had the honor of being a delegate from the women’s organization in Ger many as well as the honor of rep resenting the Ukrainian wom en’s organization of England. The Congress of Ukrainian Women in Philadelphia declared itself definitely in support of the U krainian nation’s rig h t to free dom and democracy, and as firm ly opposed to the occupation and regime of the communists in Ukraine. Furtherm ore, the Con gress resolved to continue the work of the U krainian women’s organizations in the Free World by form ing the W orld Federa tion of U krainian Women’s Or ganizations (WFUW O). The objectives of WFUWO are: 1. To continue the work of the U krainian women organizations in accordance w ith the require ments of the tim e ; 2. To coordinate the work of all Ukrainian women in the Free W orld; 3. To represent Ukrainian wo manhood at national and inter national forum s. A t the present tim e WFUWO has fourteen members — nation al organizations on three conti nents and in eleven countries. The headquarters of WFUWO are in Philadelphia. The main functions of W FU WO are: 1. Educational; 2. C ultural; 3. Publications and publicity; 4. Social W elfare and the u ti lization of local services as well as help for the needy in other countries; 5. Soviet studies com m ittee; 6. Relations w ith world fem in ist movements and studies about their current trends. W hat was the purpose of our Conference ? 1. To consolidate and elevate the work of our women’s organi zations in Europe and to promote their interest in public problems ; 2. To help the Ukrainian m other and to recognize her tal ent for the successful bringing up of children in new conditions and environm ents: 3. To find a common medium for cooperation w ith our young people, to help them , and to guide them to an education for the highest ideals of all mankind and of their own n atio n ; 4. To examine closely the posi tion of Ukrainian women under the Soviet regime and to become accurate inform ers regarding their plight; 5. To strive towards union of all U krainians in the Free World, to work together to gain freedom and independence for the hum an being and for the nations, but prim arily for the Ukrainian na tion.
