FO LK F A IR IN P H IL A D E L PH IA On A pril 24, 25, 1964, a Folk F air, including 45 nationality groups, w as organized by th e N ationality Service C enter in Philadelphia, Pa. The Folk F a ir is presented every tw o years. This year over 3,000 volunteers worked h ard to m ake it a g re at success. The U krainian group was form ed of o u tstanding U N W LA personalities. M rs. V eronica Ce- helsky, P resid en t of th e Region al Council, was Com m ittee C hair m an; M rs. S tefanie Push- kar, V ice-P resident of U N W LA w as in charge of th e exhibit and M rs. A nne Syw ulak, T reasu rer of U N W LA of th e food division. Some 35,000 people visited th e Folk F a ir a t Convention Hall. The exhibition of U krainian folk a rt, books on U krainian sub jects, p rin ted in E nglish, and sam ples of th e U krainian press, published in th e F ree W orld, drew large crowds. One of th e m ain attra ctio n s of th e U k rain ian booth w as a scale model of a sta tu e of T aras Shevchenko. Be side th a t visitors to th e U k rain ian booth w ere presented w ith a specially published pam phlet. E ach national group presented th e ir folk dances, w hich w ere very w arm ly applauded by th e audience. Judging by th e ap plause, th e U krainian group proved to be one of th e fav o r ites. Y oung U krainians, m em bers of P last, SUMA and ODUM y outh organizations w ere d ress ed in b eautiful U krainian n ation al a ttire . T hey presented a w alk ing dance (khorovid) and region al dances (hopak, kolom eyka). The U krainian group also served culinary specialties w hich w ere am ong th e 58 m ain dishes and 40 varieties of p astries, cakes and sw eets, w hich w ere p repared by all th e p artic ip a tin g groups. K yivska’s book “U krainian B orshch, V arenyky and O ther D ishes” we give a new recipe. Peel o ff skin, chop thoroughly, m ix w ith onion, add vinegar, oil, salt, pepper, etc. to taste. The eggplant caviar should have a sour flavor. Leave to stand overnight in a cool place until served. If olives are used, chop and add th em to th e m ix tu re. In th is case use less olive oil. G RA D U A TES’ LIST A list of U krainian girls, g ra d u atin g w ith B.A. and M.A. is be ing sta rte d now on th e pages of O ur Life. Our Regional Councils are in charge of it. Besides th e nam es of th e girls and th e nam e of th e college or un iv ersity from w hich th ey are graduated, and th e ir special study is added, if possible, th e fu tu re plans of th e graduate. A t th e req u est of The W orld F ederation of U krainian W om en’s O rganizations (W FUW O) th e W orld M ovem ent of M others addressed a le tte r to th e H um an R ig h ts Com mission a t th e U n it ed N ations, asking atten tio n fo r U krainian m others and children su fferin g from fam ine. As a m eans of help M.M.M. asked for th e reducing of custom duties on food parcels fo r th e period of a y ear and extending of CARE action behind th e Iron C urtain.
