A Tremendous W ork A N EW FA M IN E The new s of th e w heat deal w ith USSR laid b are th e food sh o rtag e in U kraine. M any a r ti cles about th is situ atio n have dealt w ith th e insufficiency of th e Soviet economic system w hich cannot provide its own population w ith enough food. H owever, few indeed th o u g h t of th e population itself. T ourists reported queues before food stores and th e inadequacy of b re ak fa sts in th e ir hotels. In re ality th is problem is m uch m ore serious. In p riv ate letters, arriv in g to relatives here, calls for food parcels are m ore and m ore u rg en t. U kraine is again th rea ten ed by fam ine. Besides th e economic system and its com plete failu re in ag racu ltu r— th e w eath er w as also disastrous. Storm y w inds from th e E a st de stroyed th e en tire crop in Cen tra l and E a ste rn U kraine. It is th e fo u rth fam ine in th is century. The firs t one broke out in 1921, a fte r th e w ar fo r inde pendence of U kraine. The popu lation w as th en helped by th e re lief action of th e ARA, presided over by P resid en t Hoover. The second one w as caused by th e R ussian Soviet collectivization system in 1932-33 w hich re su lt ed in th e death of several m il lion people. No relief action from outside w as adm itted. The th ird one broke out in 1944-45 a fte r W orld W ar II and w as relieved by th e help of U N RRA . Now we approach th e fo u rth one. W ill th e re be a helping hand to th e starv in g people of U kraine? W e p u t th is question to th e world, fully conscious of its m eaning. The starv in g people of U kraine are not only hum an be ings b u t also our relatives and com patriots. T heir fa te cannot be of indifference to A m ericans of U krainian descent who are bound by ties of in te re st and love w ith th e land of th e ir fo re fa th ers. The 73rd A nnual Convention of th e G eneral F ed eratio n of W om en’s Clubs p resented a re view of endeavor and accom plishm ent. N early 2,000 dele g ates gathered, June 7-11, 1964, in A tlantic City, N. J. The plen a ry sessions, th e panels and speeches gave a w onderful in sig h t into a trem endous work. The p rin ted rep o rts of th e va rious D epartm ents and D ivi sions, as well as those of th e S tate P residents w ere detailed accounts of th e ir effo rts. T heir audiences learned about th e con servation pro g ram and its m ani fold m anifestations. The educa tion pro g ram p o rtray ed com m u nication w ork, Indian affairs, leadership m obilization, lib rary service and scholarship division. The F ine A rts D ep artm en t in cluded m any p ro jects and divi sions. The Hom e L ife D ep art m ent w orks fo r th e fam ily life. I t s ta rts w ith religion and sp iritu al values and ties it into hom e m an agem ent and m odern food trends. The In tern atio n al A ffairs De p a rtm e n t keeps Club women in form ed about th e U nited N ations and life all over th e world. The Public A ffairs D ep artm en t in cludes a com m unity im prove m en t program , h ea lth division and law observance. T here is some success in all fields. W h at you actually feel is th e real endeavor, th e devotion in th e plan and its execution. All these wom en like th e ir w ork and support it w ith th e ir whole h ea rts. T hey feel th e ir responsi bility tow ards th e ir fellow citi zens and th e whole world. T his w as especially visible in th e a ttitu d e tow ards our in te r ests and desires. Radio F ree E u rope, in serving th e captive E u ropean peoples keeps alive th e ir hope of reg ain in g th e ir rig h ts of freedom , independence and self governm ent. It is accom plished, th ro u g h th e collective effo rts of p riv ate citizens, in th e very b est A m erican trad itio n . T herefore it w as urged th a t th e GFW C m em ber clubs continue th e ir support of Radio F ree E urope. UNW LA P resident M rs. Helen L ototsky m ade a m otion, on th e floor, th a t Radio F ree E urope extend its broadcasting service to o th er captive nations of E u rope, nam ely B yelorussia, E sto nia, L atvia, L ithuania, and U k rain e and others, inasm uch as th ese captive countries are situ ated in E urope and are recogniz ed in Public Law 96-90, passed by th e U. S. Congress, in July 1959. As such th ey are entitled to m oral and o th er support, on th e p a rt of th e U nited S tates and th e A m erican people. T his mo tion w as passed to th e R esolu tion C om m ittee fo r adoption. Besides our P resident, M rs. H elen L ototsky, M rs. M ary D ushnyck w as also present. Our O rganizational C hairm an re p re sented th e “W om en fo r F re e dom” organization of w hich she is secretary. She gave h e r rep o rt on th e Council of In ternational Clubs Session, June 8th. “W om en fo r F reedom ” was founded in 1953 to give to th e women of A m erica, th ro u g h research and public presentation, a b e tte r un derstan d in g of Com m unism and to help build resistance ag ain st th e ever-present C om m unist of fensive. M em bers are A m erican- born women and those who fled th e C om m unist rule in th e ir countries. T hus U krainian women w ere represented a t th e 73rd A nnual Convention of th e G eneral F ede ra tio n of W om en’s Clubs.
