The Board Meets by Anastasia Volker Septem ber 28-29,1963, m arked an o th er m ilestone in th e annals of th e U krainian N ational W om en ’s League B oard — A nother m eeting . . . a m eeting to reflect upon . . . a m eeting w hich added im petus and g re a te r depth to th e new forw ard look of SUA. A look of th e fu tu re — a look of new vi sions to be realized, new projects to be executed, new responsibili ties to be shouldered, new p ath s to be tried . . . All th ese and more. The firs t post-convention an nual m eeting b ro u g h t out th e veteran, and th e novice Souzan- ka, and each contributed gener ously of h er ideas, h er experi ences, and h er w ishes to success of th e m eeting. O fficers and R e gional C hairm en rep o rts strea m ed in like m any hued tread s each w inding on a huge spool — some b rig h t, some m ore subdued, each additionally colored by th e p er sonality of th e person reporting. Regions rep o rtin g w ere P enn sylvania, M etropolitan N e w York, M ichigan, Ohio, New J e r sey, New Y ork S tate, Illinois. On th e whole th e m eetings w ere spiked w ith lively conversation, hum or a t tim es, excitem ent, s ti m ulating discussions packed w ith verbal action providing no chance fo r dosing, or cross-w ord puzzle solving. Tim e is alw ays a facto r and it w as parcelled out in accord ance w ith th e im portance of th e issues involved. Considerable tim e w as devoted to th e O rgani zational, P rogram , Public R ela tions, and Finance C om m ittee re ports. No special form ula to-date has been concocted as to how to gain m em bers, y et our P resid en t reported th a t five new C hapters cam e into being since th e last Convention, others are in th e m aking . . . th e O rganization is s o lv e n t. . . and signs of progress noted. Regional Councils, a recent new step, are gaining in statu re. However, an appraisal of th e ir responsibility to th e C hapters in th e region, and to th e H eadquar te rs it will tak e tim e to develop, grow, understand and fully ap preciate th is new organization al arm of SUA. Individual C hap ters, 77 in num ber, are as strong as its m em bers and leaders. E m phasis w as placed on leadership train in g , one of our g re a t needs, and p artially resolved. Two n a tional conventions in June stressed th e im portance of rep re sentation, and th e need to sup plem ent th e public relations fund. To briefly sum m arize — our p a st h isto ry — our fu tu re is be fore us — fu tu re based on th e experience of th e p ast, and into th e fu tu re of SUA m u st be w orked in new concepts, new vi sions, new projects, new ideas, in order to flow new life into th e organization and m ake it pulsate w ith vigor and v itality . T his is th e forw ard look, evidenced a t th e m eeting and slowly rising upon th e horizon of SUA. Some of th e h ig h lig h ts of th e Com m it tee Plans th u s reflect th e th in k ing and th e convictions of th e w om en: Organizational : M em bership — draw on th e g re a t reservoir of A m erican born women of U krainian descent. Regional Councils give full support. Lead ership tra in in g — pilot program s in New Y ork C hapter 72, D et ro it C hapter 37, w ork out pro gram in cooperation w ith Re gional Council. P ro g ra m : G ear to th e needs of th e tim es . . . interw eave w ith U krainian history, literatu re, folk arts, in terp reted into m od ern usage — trad itio n s — cook ing. Regional Councils adopt plan to hostess graduates. S tan d ard ize questionaire draw ing on New Y ork and Phillie regions’ expe rience. Educational-Cultural : C reate College of L ectu rers (Speakers B ureau) to research and prepare m aterial on folklore, folk arts, etc. Mobile Folk A rt E x h ib it fo r schools and stu d en ts to be re alized.
