Thus continental conferences of WF UWO, oriented towards their own Ukrainian women’s organi zations are indicative and fruit ful. The agenda will consist of lec tures, discussions and resolu tions embracing the ideological frame and actual activities of WFUWO and those of European women’s organizations towards organizational, educational, so cial work, cultural, public rela tion, publicity. The Conference will also take a stand on the po sition of the woman in Ukraine, behind the Iron Curtain; and on a planned Ukrainian World Con gress in the Free World. Deserv ing attention will be given to the exchange of information with lo cal Ukrainian and English citi zens through press conferences, press releases and social events. Those who will participate are members of Executive WFUWO in Europe (Vice-Presidents and Officers), members of WFUWO Council (Presidents of member organizations of England, Ger many, France, Belgium and Au stria), and delegates of same. The election of the vice-president of WFUWO, in Europe will com plete the organizational ties of WFUWO with its European members. Arrangements for the Confer ence are undertaken by the Com mittee of representatives of Eu ropean organizations, headed by the current Vice-president for Europe, Mrs. Nina Kovalenko of Paris. The committee resides in London. The Conference is scheduled in November, 1963 at Nottingham, England, seat of a large Ukrain ian community. REVIEW UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION IN CANADA On May 8, 9 and 10, 1963 the 20th Convention of our member organization was held in Toron to, Ontario. The wide picture of its life and striving was revealed in te reports and discussions. The first Branches of UWO were founded in 1930, when new immigrants settled in Canada, after World War I. Ukraine’s struggle for freedom was fresh in the memory of its members. Therefore the programs of UWO were based on preserving old traditions, studying Ukrainian folk art, help for the needy in the old country; and the up bringing of children, in the Ukrainian spirit. All actions of UWO were marked by an ardent patriotism that tried to serve the Ukrainian cause. The patron of UWO was Olga Basarab, an un derground worker, who died in prison, without having betrayed a single word of all the secrets entrusted to her. With the passing of years the work of UWO became more ela borate. UWO published “Wom an’s Page” in an Ukrainian weekly, which later became the magazine “Woman’s World.” UWO created an auxiliary fund called “Ukrainian Gold Cross” before World War II, which served to help war victims and refugees. To foster Ukrainian folk art UWO published the first booklet about the folk costume, as well as many other books and materials for the cultural devel opment of their members. As citizens of Canada UWO members wish to contribute to Canadian life. During World War II, UWO cooperated with the Canadian Red Cross, and was active in other Canadian endea vors. In 1947 UWO became a member of The National Coun cil of Women of Canada, and is cooperating in different fields. Mrs. Stefania Sawchuk was re-elected President of UWO in Canada. She is simultaneously the Vice-President of WFUWO in Canada. UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION IN BRAZIL Ukrainian settlers came to Brazil in 1890’s, but the first news about a woman’s group is not noted until 1922. Then an Ukrainian Association was founded in Porto Union, Parana; and a Women’s Division estab lished there. Women helped or ganize the social life there, and took care of the children. The Ukrainian settlement then consisted of farmers who strove hard in their dispersed “colonies” as farms then were called, to earn a living. There fore new branches could not easily be founded, or women far mers organized. But, in the 20’s several other Women’s Divisions were founded. A new life started in the 30’s when new immigrants came. The Women’s Division in Curitiba, Parana led the program and work. But the governmental law in the late 30’s, which stopped the work of non-Brazilian orga nizations, interrupted this growth. Only after World War II was the Women’s Division in Curitiba re-activated. Other Di visions followed. In 1952 the Women’s Division was changed into the Ukrainian Women’s Organization and all Divisions transformed into Branches. Its headquarters is in Curitiba. Special by-laws were established. Its work consisted of cultural affairs, fostering of Ukrainian folk art, educational efforts, welfare actions and ani mated relations with other groups. On March 16 and 17, 1963 a Meeting of Branch Presidents of UWO as well as Ukrainian Sis terhoods was organized. After reports from the branches two lectures were held; the first about modern trends in the up bringing of children and the sec ond about Ukrainian folk art. The President of UWO is Mrs. Olga Horachuk. Simultaneously she is WFUWO’s Vice-President in Latin America. 22 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ, 19 63 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
