General Federation of Women's Clubs Convention Report It was an honor and a real privilege to be the official rep resentative of the Ukrainian Na tional Women’s League of Amer ica at the 72nd Annual Conven tion of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which met in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 10- 14. Theme “To Strengthen the Arm of Liberty” was the theme of the convention, which breezed through every session, every speech, and every report like a breath of spring, and into the hearts and minds of some 2,000 delegates and foreign visitors. With the ideas, tha thoughts, the convictions expressed, and the projects and programs planned around this theme cer tainly the Arm of Liberty will not only be strengthe r ed, but lengthened. Program Interestingly enougn our pro gram well coincides with that of the GFWC in the field of civic activities, education, citizenship, welfare, arts and crafts, home life, youth programs, interna tional affairs, etc. But, with these added ingredients; the dual cultural background and doubled responsibility to the Ukrainian community, and the general American community. Ukrainian women must work harder. gram, in planning and in discus sions of this women’s parlia ment, we Ukrainian women are not behind.] The same problems, the same achievements, the same difficulties move us as con front other women of the world. And we are proud to fulfill the place women from Ukraine are denied to achieve. As reported by our delegates. Our Participation While space does not permit detailed report, emphasis on the nationalities, the international clubs, and our participation w i ll be of significant interest to our readers. The Convention was host to delegates representing nearly 50 countries. The follow ing delegates reported on the work of the clubs in their respec tive countries: Argentina, Baha mas, England, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jamaica, Netherlands, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. We partici pated in the International Lun cheon and Session. And at the procession of the International delegates, Mrs. Ann Wasylow- sky, from Chapter 22 of Chicago took part as a guest of the Illi nois Federation of Women’s Clubs, wearing her Ukrainian costume. We also participated in the sess i on presenting the Na tional and Associate member or ganization. The tea honoring in ternational delegates, at the In ternational Institute of Milwau kee, involved our Milwaukee Chapter 51, and its president, Mrs. Sofia Chamulak and her Vice-President as hostesses. Resolutions The most important resolu tions were those maintaining the influence of spiritual values in the life and education of our chil dren; and the fostering of ap preciation for our patriotic heri tage. It reveals the watchfulness of GFWC for the spiritual needs of our community. Many resolutions were dedi cated to the welfare program of GFWC: aid to dependent chil dren, protection of children, safety, use of stimulating drugs, safeguarding of the American home and refugees. The basic ob jectives and work of GFWC are aimed towards fulfillment of these requirements. Personal Impressions Interesting and impressive were the convention highlights interspersed with world person alities. It was exciting to hear Vice-President, Lyndon John son, Edward R. Murrow, Ambas sador Francis T. P. Plimpton, and others; to listen to the heart-rendering strings of Mis- cha Elman’s violin, to see the in comparable Hildegarde, and Rob ert Preston. Equally interesting, exciting and heartwarming are the delegates and the friend ships made at such gatherings. To know Miss Visele Shaw of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a de light. I had the pleasure of meet ing her in Istanbul. She report edly spoke at the luncheon, say ing: “Women can have a tremen dous influence on the world, but they have to be willing to use it. After all, women rear men, and they influence their husbands.” Mrs. Maria Rosa Vidal of Puerto Rico expressed her idea that women can play a part in assur ing world peace. Or to meet Mrs. Ligia Bieliukas, a Lithuanian ex ile pleading the cause of captive nations. Inspiration personified is the president of GFWC, Mrs. Dexter Otis Arnold, and to be come acquainted with your own State delegates is a delight. The warmth of a handshake, the friendliness, the joy of being to gether as club women sharing common interests and goals adds magic to the convention. The impact of ideas, the vital per sonalities. Such fellowship cre ates an electrifying atmosphere to be shared and long remem bered. It is truly a rewarding experience, and my wish is to find a way for more of our wom en to share in this experience of a GFWC convention.
