Folk Art Comes Alive! U N W L A C H A P T E R 37, D E T R O IT, M ICH. W ith a b it o f im agin ation U k rainian cross-stich d esigns h ave been adapted to m odern day use by th e m em bers o f C hapter 37. U nder th e capable tu tela g e of D onia D em ray and S tella F e- dyk, a cross-stitch in g class b e gan. W ith buzzing en th u siasm , th e p rogress of each cross stitch er w as exch an ged at reg ular club m eetin gs. T he b egin n ers en th u siastically tried to em broider at lea st one pair of tow els during th e cu rren t club year, w h ile exp erts lik e A lexan dra N ebozenko, w ho learned th e art from h er m oth er in U k raine w h en sh e w as a child, m od estly com pleted six pairs o f tow els. B y O ctober 5, 1962, th e d ate o f th e fa ll gam es p arty, fifty w h ite lin en fin g ertip tow els w ere exq u i sitely decorated. A pair o f tow els w as given as a prize at each tab le. T he m em bers learned how to cross-stitch b eau tifu l U k rain ian d esign s and took pride in sh arin g th eir accom plish m en t w ith oth ers. S everal m em bers, still little girls at h eart, cooperated in d ressin g a fou rteen inch doll in a U krainian costu m e o f th e P ol tava region for an additional prize given at th e gam es p arty. A n a sta sia V olker donated th e b eau tifu l H orsem an doll and som e hand-w oven U k rainian fab ric for h er sk irt. S tella F e- dyk d esigned th e cloth es, cross stitch ed m ost of th e costum e, m ade th e headpiece and red b ots, w h ile D onia D em ray em broidered th e slip and search ed variou s stores for ju st th e rig h t sized coral beads. W hen th e ch arm in g U k rain ian girl w as dressed, sh e w as ch risten ed Ok san a! It w as so hard to p art w ith O ksana th a t th e m em bers decided th a t as a fu tu re club p roject each m em ber w ould like to d ress one b oy and one girl doll for h erself from th e region o f h er choice so th a t th e club w ould h ave a couple from each region o f th e U k rain e. In th is w ay th e m em bers w ould learn about th e d ifferen t ty p es of de sig n s and m ode of dress in th e variou s region s and h ave dolls of th e region s available for d is p lay purposes. In O ctober a “C ross-stitch Sem in ar” w as held a t th e h om e of A nne Strokon, P resid en t of C hapter 37, to w hich m em bers o f C hapter 37, p rosp ective m em bers, and m em b ers o f oth er ch ap ters w ere invited . C ross- stitch teach ers p recut needle books, eye gla ss cases and com p act covers from felt, b asted on th e can vass, and b egan an U k rain ian d esign on each arti cle. E ach p erson fin ish ed at lea st one article during th e evenin g. T he even in g of learn in g and fe l low sh ip w as concluded w ith re fresh m en ts o f tea and U k rain ian poppy seed roll. A n ew n am e w as added to th e m em b ersh ip list and ideas for oth er w ays o f d is p layin g cro ss-stitch in g w ere ex changed ! In N ovem ber, th e In tern ation al In stitu te o f D etroit, M ich., sponsored its annual Old W orld M arket w h erein n ation ality groups had b ooth s from w h ich th ey sold a rtistic p ieces exem p lar o f th eir resp ective cultural backgrounds. C hapter 37 decor ated m ore eye gla ss cases, needle book covers, com pact covers, g u est tow els, and apron pock ets w ith cross-stitch d esign s w hich w ere sold in th e U krainian booth. Sm all in exp en sive articles w ere chosen so th a t children from groups like G irl Scouts, B oy Scou ts, C am p F ire G irls, and school classes w ho v isited th e M arket could buy U krainian g ifts as part of th eir C h ristm as sh opping w ith an in tern ation al flavor. D ecoratin g linens, cloth in g, and fu rn ish in gs w ith a n eed le and th read is an art practiced w ith sk ill and en joym en t b y m an y U k rain ian w om en. E x q u i site needlew ork is th e pride o f a nation o f hom e-proud w om en. It is also th e g ift o f affectio n : a girl w ill em broider for h er lov er, a m other for h er child, and a frien d fo r a friend . W ith a little im agin ation and ad aptation lovely articles can be m ade. S eek in g th e adaptable d esig n s, learn in g how to cross-stitch , and producing articles as a club pro ject can provide a p rogram o f T he U N W LA B ran ch 37 in D etro it a rra n g e d a gam es p arty .
