A l th ou gh all B ran ch es of U N W L A are bound b y th e sam e con stitu tion , governed b y identical b y law s, pledged to th e sam e aim s purposes and program , y e t each develop s d ifferen tly in accord ance w ith th eir m em ber’s in ter ests. J u st as children o f th e sam e p aren ts d iffer in p h ysiq u e and ch aracter, so do B ran ch es of U N W L A vary in character. Som e B ran ch es are m ore church- m inded ; oth ers favor n ational is su es ; still oth er follow h um ani tarian and w elfare lin es; som e h ave adopted broad com m u nity con cepts and resp o n sib ilities; som e are am bassadorial in char acter and th e go-b etw een in an U k rain ian and A m erican com m u n ity. A ll w orking, strivin g, and flo u rish in g under th e um brella o f U N W L A . A s in a fa m ily — children som etim es oppose th e lead ership and au th ority of p aren ts — th is happens in th e R egion al C ouncil also. Som e B ranches do n ot like th e in terferen ce or even under stan d th e purpose o f th e R egion al C ouncil. A lth ou gh su ch cases are few th ey p u t a stron g de m and on lead ersh ip o f th e R e gional C ouncil. A ccord ing to m o dern public relation s m eth ods th e procedure h as to be cau tiou s and p atien t. E x a ctly as w ith un- obedient children. T h ese sm all and y e t d ifficu lt exp erien ces are often rew arded b y m an y jo y fu l resu lts. L ook at th e pride each B ranch dem on stra tes at its ow n ach ievem en ts. T hey consider each m at ter from th e p oin t of th e w hole region and th u s g et a broader view . T he B ran ches grow closer togeth er, under th e lead ersh ip of th e R egional C ouncil. Y . a collection “Our C ountry” o f preciou s m em orial ob jects w as m ade. In N ew Y ork, N . Y ., U k rain ian folk art w as rep resen ted year a fter year at th e In tern ation al W om en’s ex h ib it. In N ew ark, N . J. a sch olar sh ip in m em ory o f th e R egion al council’s late P resid en t, O lena H ordynsk a w as founded. In C hi cago, 111. an an n iversary exh ib it o f th e prom in en t p ain ter, O lena K u lch ytsk a is planned. In D e troit, in addition to a nice col lection of origin al folk costu m es, now a b uilding fu n d for U N W L A hom e started . T his is in gen eral th e charac ter of th e R egional C ouncil. W e are really a b ig fa m ily w ith its jo y and sorrow s. L et’s be a tru e and a ffectio n a te one, as th e p res en t tim es and our p rogram re quires it. A n a sta sia V olker V ice-P resid en t o f U N W L A In O ctober, 1962 tw o lectu res about U k rain e in th e 18th cen tu ry w ere heard on th e P aris radio. A n ou tstan d in g F rench sla v ist P rof. M arie Sherrer spoke on channel F ran ce III. M rs. S herrer is p rofessor of U k rain ian in th e F rench School o f E astern lan gu ages. In 1947 sh e published a book about U k rain ian epic poem s — dum y. O U R D A Y C E N T E R S T he U N W L A C hapters are now organ izin g D ay C enters or p lay groups for pre-school ch il dren. T he cen ters m eet once a w eek for a few hours, under th e d irection o f a teach er. T h ey sin g and p lay togeth er. T h ese m eet in gs n ot only enrich th eir U k rain ian vocabulary but give th em th e p rivilege of en joyin g a large com pany o f children. T here are alread y 5 D ay Cen ters (C leveland, P hiladelphia, C hicago, U tica, B a ltim o re). T H E A N N IV E R S A R Y O F A N N E Y O N K E R T he C om m ittee o f U krainian W om en o f C anada in T oronto celebrated recen tly th e 25th d eath an n iversary o f A n ne Y on- ker. A lead in g w om an in her com m u nity, A n n e Y o n k e r founded an organ ization “Cana- dian-U krainian W om en,” w h ich w as v ery active in th e 2 0 ’s. T hrough her in itia tiv e and rich donations A n n e Y onker su pp ort ed m an y needed U krainian pro je cts in C anada.
