Help for O ur Churches Two moves w ere m ade recen t ly in U krainian com m unities. F irst, a m em orandum to th e U nited N ations, signed by 25 o u tstan d in g F rench intellectuals — aim ing to free M etropolitan Joseph Slipy a fte r 17 years of forced labor in USSR. Second w ere resolutions 82 and 718 in troduced into th e H ouse and Sen ate of th e U. S. by C ongressm an D. S hort and Senator M. R. Young, u rg in g th e Com missions of F oreign R elations to tak e steps in th e U nited N ations to consider th e condition of th e p e r secuted U krainian church. These tw o moves w ere under tak en separately, and w ithout connection w ith each other. It proves th e conscience of th e free w orld is alive and responding. B ut it shows th e p lig h t of th e U krainian Catholic and O rtho dox church. The sam e fa te befell th e P ro te sta n t, Jew ish and Mos lem fa ith s in USSR. W e are g ra te fu l to th e in itia to rs of these moves. W e are es pecially proud th a t th e F rench m em orandum w as handed oyer to th e rep resen tativ e of U kraine in U N by M rs. M arie L afau- cheux, P resid en t of th e In te rn a tional Council of W omen. And to S enator M. R. Y oung and Con gressm an Don L. L. Short, we A m ericans of U krainian descent have already expressed our th an k s. B ut is th is enough? Should it not be done m ore in th is m an ner? W e read again and again about fa ith persecutions in USSR. R ecently th e com m unists in Poland sta rte d an organized a tta c k on th e Polish church. The people th e re cannot defend them selves ag ain st it. The fa ith ful and th e p riests are helpless ag ain st th e organized pressure of a to ta lita ria n state. It is very, very little in com parison w ith w hat could be done. A lthough th is issue cannot be th e object of a diplom atic in te r ference, it can influence th e opinion of th e free world. The spreading of news, th e analyzing of th e press, th e rep o rtin g of each new fa c t can help keep th e m a tte rs alive. This could be of m ost effective help to th e churches behind th e Iron C ur tain. T herefore let us all support sim ilar actions. W e U krainians express our g ra titu d e to M rs.
