A Q uery to the Press I. Our A m erican p ress h as long b een _ con s i dered as one o f th e b est in th e w orld, fo r its freed om o f exp ression and ob jectiv ity . It tries hard to g e t to th e b ottom o f th in g s, and to exp ose th em in th eir tru e lig h t. T h at i s its bounded d u ty and preoccupation. A lso, to properly evalu ate every elem en t and fa cto r involved in w h atever proceed in gs th ere m ay be, and to p resen t th e sam e fo r an evalu ation and fin a l ju d g m en t b y its readers. T h ese fin e q u alities ch aracter izin g th e A m erican p ress, and th e F ou rth E sta te w h ich sta ffs it, are m ost needed in th ese trou blous tim es on th e intern ation al scene. T he above th o u g h ts com e to on e’s m ind w h en read in g som e m iscon cep tion s or u n tru th s p rinted in certain section s o f th e A m erican p ress p ertain in g to th e U k rain ian people liv in g in th eir n a tiv e b u t S oviet R u ssian en slaved land. T h e U k rain ian s are a n ational en tity , w ith th eir ow n h isto ry and cultu re. T h ree tim es in th e p a st th ey h ave en joyed n ational in d ep en d en ce: th e U k rain ian K ingdom o f K iev o f th e M iddle A g es, w h en to d ay’s R u ssia w as ju st an obscure M u scovy; th e U k rain ian K ozak S ta te o f th e 16th -17th cen tu ries, w h en th e th en p ow erfu l M u scovy conquer ed and d estroyed i t ; and th e U k rain ian N ation al R epublic of W orld W ar I end tim es w h ich th e B olsh evik s o f R u ssia, aided b y th e P oles and th e R um anians, as w ell as b y T sa rist R u ssian forc es, and ab etted b y th e m isgu id ed p olicies o f th e victoriou s A llies, in clu d in g th e U . S. A ., fin a lly h ad to g iv e up th e u neven stru g gle. A ll o f th is appears to h ave m issed th e m in ds o f som e o f our lead in g d ailies and periodicals, includ in g th e T im e m agazin e. T h ey still in sist to regard U k rain ian s as “R u ssian s,” U k rain ian cities as “R u ssian ,” h isto ry and cu ltu re as “R u ssian ” and U k rain ian n otab les as “R u ssian .” B y w ay o f exam p le: K iev, th e an cien t cap ital o f U k rain e, is re ferred to as “R u ssian .” A lexan der A rchipenko, w orld fam ous scu lptor, w h o h as co n sisten tly declared h im self, p riv a tely and p ub licly, to b e a U k rain ian , is called a ‘R u ssian .” M ichael K lochko, th e se lf and gen erally acknow ledged U k rain ian scholar, w h o recen tly absconded from b e h in d th e iron cu rtain and w h o at p resen t is h a v in g h is m em oirs p ub lish ed in th e p ress, is no w h ere referred to as a U k rain ian, b u t ju st as R u ssian , al th ou gh h e w as born, raised and ed u cated in U k rain e. Som e section s o f th e A m erican p ress also refu se to ad m it th e fa c t th a t w h en th e U k rain ian N ation al R epublic fell, its con querors and despoilers, th e R u s sian B olsh evik s and n ow C om m u n ists, w ere forced b y th e very stren g th o f th e U k rain ian asp i ration s fo r freed om to m ollify th e U k rain ian s b y settin g up th e U k rain ian S.S.R . T his, o f course, w as ju st a fiction , fo r th e over all rule, dow n to th e m in u test de tail, em anated from M oscow . T h ey refu se, too, to acknow l ed ge th e stren g th o f th e U k rain ian n ation al m ovem en t as m an i fested b y th e fa c t th a t M oscow w as com pelled to allow U k rain e to becom e one o f th e ch arter m em b ers o f th e U n ited N ation s. It does n ot occur to th em , also, to con su lt th e S oviet C ensus rec ords, w h ich sh ow th a t som e 37 m illion people declared th em selv es to b e U k rain ian . T o be su re, th ere are m an y m ore m il lions o f th em th ere, b u t ob viou s ly M oscow ju g g led th e sta tistic s and w as forced to yield to th e 37 m illion fig u re. S till, on e’s a tten tion should be called to th e a ctiv ities, th e h eroic deeds, to be sure, o f th e U k rain ian In su rgen t A rm y (U P A — U k rain sk a P ovstan ch a A r m iy a ), w h ich d urin g th e la st w ar fo u g h t va lia n tly a g a in st b oth th e R u s sian and G erm an occup an ts o f U k rain e, and w h ich , in one form or an other, is still con tin u in g its cam paign fo r U k rain ian n ational freed om .
