Heroic Poet of Ukraine Lesya U krainka is recognized as one of the leading figures in modern U krainian literature. She died in her early forties, having suffered from tuberculo sis during m ost of her lifetime. W hile this took her out of the conventional paths of life, this very rem oteness, together w ith the obscurity she gave herself, for fear of reprisal, by assum ing the name of Lesya Ukrainka, gave her a vantage point from which she had a panoramic view of Ukraine, and its problems. In her sick room she dreamed, and wrote poetry of a high level of artistic perfection, and supplied her readers w ith such an am ount of ideas th a t it can be said she shaped th e current U krain i an generation. H er words touched it like “tem pered steel,” which “gleams in battle.” Lesya U krainka is recognized as second only to Shevchenko, the g reatest of all in Ukrainian literature. “Yes, song is absolute, free, self directing . . . The m oment will come when all fetters lie shattered,” she wrote. In 1950 U krainian organized womanhood published, in Eng lish, a translation of her poems “Spirit of Flam e,” by th e late Percifal Cundy. This event brought her works into large libraries, there to be in the ranks of world literature. The Ukrainian Women’s League of America evolved a new way of paying hom age to the poetess. The UNW LA of Cleveland, Ohio, will unveil a statue to her in th e Cultural Garden of nationalities in th eir city. This drive started several years ago. The prom inent Uk rainian sculptor, Michael Che- reshniovsky was invited to model her figure. Taking into conside ration her exalted place in th e U krainian community, th e few pictures of her, as m aterial to work with, th e sculptor has made an excellent creation, now cast in the final mold. These prepara tions required much work, w ith the U krainian women of Cleve land ready to do it. To them is th e credit of having erected the first m onum ent to th e g reatest U krainian poetess in the free world.
