Use of Ukrainian Embroidery in Current Fashion By Motria Holowinsky Fashion Design Student, Moore Institute of Art A woman, who pays no heed to fashion, and wears her clothes w i th ind i fference, as to how they become her as an indivi dual, or to fashion, deprives her self of a great deal of joy. She also is cheating those who asso ciate w ith h er; for at least she owes them the pleasure of being seen becomingly attired. The discrim inating woman is one who dresses not only, w ith fashion, but who seeks some thing distinctive in her garm ent. The fin est and m ost sophisticated way to decorate is to use embroidery, for other types of trim m ing m ay tend to m ere prettiness. The rules to keep in mind, when decorating w ith embroid ery are: 1. Long vertical bands of em broidery direct the eye upward. W hen used in such position, they give the illusion of height to the short and stout. 2. Diagonal bands of embroi dery, and pointed effects, also give the appearance of slender ness. 3. Horizontal bands tend to carry the eye across. Bands of embroidery running crosswise, or around the figure, serve to re duce th e appearance of height, in the tall and angular. It is well to rem em ber th a t round lines express youth, and diagonal lines sophistication, straig h t lines, down or across, express conservatism . N aturally, a large woman should always use diagonal and straig h t lines. Such lines give a very pleasing bal ance. If one is short, one should avoid crosswise lines; if one is too tall, one should not use lengthwise or diagonal lines; if one is Stout, one' should avoid or nate designs. However, it is not enough to know these principles and apply them everytime. Each individual case has its specific problem s; and so one’s own judgm ent should determ ine the choice of a style. A stout woman who choos es a dress w ith a very fine em broidery band from neck to hem, in the belief th a t along line of embroidery will give her height discovers th a t th e closed neck line m ay appear to divide her figure in two, thus giving the effect of th e repetition of two halves (an off-center line m ight be b etter in this case). There fore one should observe the gen eral principles, but not be domi nated by them . Know th e rules, but apply them discreetly, and w ith judgm ent. Use your m irror, and let your eyes be your guide. W alk hand in hand w ith the cur ren t fashion and use everything th a t fashion gives to make the m ost of yourself.
