The students of the Ashby Girls Secondary School, Scunthorpe, England NEEDLEWORK Under this title a report was printed in the STAR, a newspap er in Scunthorpe, England. In the Ashby Girls Secondary School a class of U krainian em broidery is tau g h t by Mrs. Ivan na W itoshynska. Fifteen girls from the age of 13-16 form a work group to especially study and execute U krainian embroid e ry .- The course consists of an in troductory explanation of dif feren t stitches, and a general ac quaintance w ith designs. A fter wards, the pupils apply th eir knowledge, by executing a piece of needlework. They choose a de sign for the object they intend to embroider. Mostly tra y clothes, chair backs and cushions are executed. One pupil embroid ered a pocketbook, another dress ing table m ats. Their beloved color scheme is black and red. Four of th e pupils finished th eir needlework so soon th a t it was presented a t th e A rts and C rafts Exhibition on April 15, 16, 1960 in Scunthorpe. All four girls received awards. Mrs. Ivanna W itoshynska was educated as a teacher in A rts and C rafts in Ukraine. WORK SHOP IN DETROIT On M arch 29th a W ork Shop on Parliam entary Procedure was held a t a m eeting of th e Region al Council of UNWLA. The out line of an agenda was prepared by the Organizational Chairman, Mrs. A nastasia Volker. Each m ember present received it. Point by point it was discuss ed: the Call to Order, the Roll Call, the M inutes, th e Report of O U R L IF E Edited by Editorial Board Published by the Ukra i nian National Women’s League of America, Inc. 909 N. Phone MA 7-7945 Officers, the Correspondence and Bills, th e Standing Committee Report, the Special Committee Report, the Unfinished and Postponed Business, the New Business, and th e Program . The motions were explained: th e types, kinds, importance, etc. Also, methods of voting ,types and k i nds of Committees, and program which should be a t the end of each meeting. This procedure is of the u t m ost importance, and aroused intense interest in those present. It should be reviewed from tim e to tim e so th a t everyone in these W ork Shops m ay thoroughly un derstand th e necessity for these form al rules. UNWLA AT THE CONVENTION OF GFWC A t the Annual M eeting of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in W ashington, D. C., UNWLA was represented by its Vice-President, Mrs. Stefania Pushkar. Mrs. P ushkar took p art in the presentation of th e inter national delegates on June 15, 1960, and gave a short report about th e activities of UNWLA. On June 14 she took p a rt in a press conference where she de scribed the situation of Ukraine and the role of U krainian women i n exile. The Council of L ithuanian Wo men was represented by Mrs. Ligia Bieliukas, who related the plight of captive nations; and described the work of women in exile. The W ashington newspapers published excerpts from the speeches of Mrs. P ushkar and Mrs. Bieliukas. F u rth er details about th is An nual M eeting will appear in the next issue. UNWLA Highlights We are glad to announce th a t our President, Mrs. Helen Lotot- sky, returned, from her leave of absence, on June 18, 1960. A fter three m onths of rest she has recovered her health, and started to work w ith her form er zeal and energy. We welcome her back to our highest office. * * * Our delegate to th e Congress of th e International Council of Women in Istanbul, Turkey, Mrs. A nastasia Volker leaves New York on A ugust 22.
