Use of Ukrainian Embroidery in Current Fashion By Motria Holow i nsky Fashion Design Student, Moore Institute of Art (Conclusion) Big sleeves have many possibilities of decoration. 1960 fashion begins w ith high interest — th e big sleeve: th e kimono, the furrel, ruffles, deep er dolmans, raglan, or countrari- wise, no sleeve at all. These, as one can see, have m any possi bilities for decoration, especial ly for embroidery. Poltavian flower m otifs as well as Hutzul- ian cross-stitch are suggested for unusual decoration. th at, we in the Free World are not allowed to help, or even to know the extent of th e damage. All we know is th a t the Virgin Lands are revolting! No news about the su ffe re rs! On May 5th an item in Kazakh- stanska P ravda stated th a t the chairmen of th e collectives had been fired from th eir positions; and on April 29th a decision was published about the new planting of grain on the Virgin Lands. News of th e crops take prece dence over the tragedies of the people in this dreadful catas trophe. Although our Ukrainian fellow brothers and sisters are suffering there, we are not allow ed to know of th eir sufferings. W hile th e Iron Curtain is lifted for certain exchanges, c a lc u la t ed to make a good impression on the Free World, it clangs shut a t the first hint of discontent, or disaster among its subject peoples, leaving no opportunity w hatsoever for the outer world to extend to them th a t m ost es sential of all things — hum an assistance, as is so naturally done whenever disaster strikes any people in the F ree World. Now let us look to collars: there are cape, plunge and por tra it necklines, surplice neck lines, deeply ruffled, boat necks, deep-dipping backs. In these, Uk rainian “krayka” can be used as a trim . Also a very interesting decoration can be used w ith ready-made braid, or passem en terie tw isted into th e U krainian conventionalized flower, so often found on ceramic vases. Today the waistline is riding low, often it is below norm al in back. The lower waistline can be accentuated w ith delicate em broidery around hip-line. To ac cent hips, the hip belting can be made out of wide “krayka,” to the shape of the hip. Skirt fashion is given added excitem ent in tunics, peolums, ruffles, or hem, or in shirred tiers. For ex ample, two color combinations can be used for a two-tiered sk irt: one tier of all-over-black, w ith red embroidery print, on beige linen, and th e other tier all-over-red, w ith black on same linen.
