A Prominent Guest Among- the distinguished guests invited to attend The W orld Con gress of Ukrainian W omen to be held in t'he Statler-H ilton hotel, June 26-27 лvill be- Florence Dwy er, Republican from the Sixth Mrs. Florence Dwyer, mem ber of the 86th Congress Congressional District of New Jersey, who is serving her second term in the 86th Congress as New Jersey’s first Republican Con gresswoman. Mrs. Dwyer’s contribution to the immediate cause of women came early in her career. It was in 1952, during the 7 years she served as Republican representa tive to the State Legislature of New Jersey that she drafted the “Equal Pay for Equal W ork for W omen Law.” Presently Mrs. Dwyer is serv ing her second term as Republican, from the Sixth Congressional Dis trict of New Jersey in the 86th Congress as New Jersey’s first Republican Congresswoman. During the 30 years that she and her husband M. Joseph Dwy er have lived in Elizabeth, N. J., she became familiar with the con siderable population of people of Ukrainian descent in Union County. Through them, and her friendly relations with Mrs. M a ria Procak, president of Branch 24 UNW LA in Elizabeth, N. J., she came to know their ethnic problems and achievements, both in the homeland Ukraine, and here in the United States. W ith this background of sympathy and understanding, by a speech in the House of Representatives she commemorated the 41st anniver sary of the Independence of U k raine, January 22, 1959. In part her speech reads: “This, ceaseless fight for free dom of their homeland is support ed wherever Ukrainian people have settled throughout the world . They have insisted in raising their voices and keeping the free world alert to the menace of Soviet Communism.” The calling- of this W orld Con gress of Ukrainian Women, by the W orld Federation of Ukrain ian W omen’s Organizations is an other instance of the power of Ukrainian women to remain arti culate against wrongs that have been their constant companion through centuries of oppression. A MEETING WITH MRS. DERANIYAGALA Hrs. Ezlyn Deraniyagala, the newly-elected president of the In ternational W omen’s Alliance, arrived in New York to attend the Status of W omen Commission, at the United Nations. Profiting from the occasion the W FUW O gave a small reception in her hon or. During the evening Mrs. De- raniagala acquainted herself with WFUWO*,s problems and activi ties and in turn spoke about the life, work, and achievements of the women of Asia. AN OBITUARY In O'berstdorf, Germany, re cently died an outstanding U k rainian woman — M aria Skoro- padska M ontresor, the daughter of the late Paul Skoropadsky, Hetm an of Ukraine. Exiled from Ukraine in 1918, with her family, she lived in Switzerland, where she studied medicine. Later, as a physician, she worked in the hos pitals of Berlin and W arsaw, where she followed her husband, Adam M ontresor. W hile up until two years prior to her death M aria Skoropadsky M ontersor did not play an out standing- political role in the U k rainian conservatist movement, she wras interested in it, and ar dently supported the work of her father and husband. But, when the sudden death of her brother Dani- lo left the Skoropadsky family wi’thout a male successor, she im mediately became the leader of the Ukrainian conservatist move ment. During the brief two years she held the position, she gained the admiration of her fellow w or kers. In this issue of OUR L IFE is a portrayal of her rich person ality.
