UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN The World Congress of Ukrainian Women The Ukrainian National Wom en’s League of America, Inc., the largest Ukrainian women’s orga nization in the non-Comm-unist world takes pleasure in informing you that it is acting as hostess, in the Statler-Hilton 'hotel, New York City, June 26-27, 1959, to the World Congress of Ukrainian Women. It is worthy of note that, while all the ethnic, exiled groups mi grating westward have many wo men’s organizations it remained for the Ukrainian Women’s Na tional League of America, Inc., to be the first to call a World Congress of their members. From four continents some 160 delegates will foregather: Curi tiba, Parana, Brazil; Caracas, Venezuela; Sydney, Australia; Munich, Germany; London, Eng land ; and from the far reaches of both Canada, and the United States of America. From the United States 100 delegates will arrive from : New York, Pennsyl vania, Michigan, Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, California Florida, Massachusetts and Con necticut. The 50 delegates from Canada will come from the prov inces of Quebec, Ontario, Manito ba and Alberta. Our Congress slogan is “Uk rainian women in the non-Com munist world in defense of the Four Freedoms, and Human Rights, wherever they are denied in the world,” a task increasingly difficult of achievement because of the present use of the term ЧСо-esistence.” This is a slyly coined word by the Russian Com munists to put the non-Commun- ist world on the defensive. Its psychological effect is incalcul able. The supposition posed by them is, that if the term is chal lenged ipso facto the challenger is non-co-operative to 'the well being of the world, as Communist Russia envisions that well-'being. Not only does this Congress have on its agenda consideration of the same problems as other wo men’s organizations: education, public relations, social work, etc., but in addition the problem of helping newly-arrived Ukrainian women to adjust themselves to settlement in the non-Communist lands to which they have come; and to appeal to women every where to condemn the violation of Human Rights conducted by Russian communists in persecut ing religion; the new trend of government-controlled boarding schools, the forceable separation of children from their families, and the hard labor to which wo men are subjected in the Russian- Communist regime. Our sisters behind the Iron Curtain are not allowed to form women’s organizations. Much less is there any law through which they may seek redress for the wrongs perpetuated upon them. W hat woman know ing of their plight can remain in sensitive to their suffering? One hundred more copies of OUR LIFE are being published, and will be sent, during the en suing months to t'he various wo men’s organizations throughout the world, giving them a com plete story oif the proceedings of our Congress. Jean Wolcott Piper AN ANNIVERSARY Throughout the non-Commun- ist world the Ukrainian press has observed the 80th birthday of an outstanding Ukrainian woman — Maria LivitS'ky.
