UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN World Congress of Ukrainian Women - In Retrospect Over is the 1959 World Con- grees of Ukrainian Women, held in the Statler-Hilton hotel, New York City. In the minds of all pre sent are memories, fixed forever, of ardent speeches dealing1 with the freedom of Ukraine, and the many outstanding persons who have given of their time and means to the betterment of Uk rainians, in Russian Soviet-domi nated Ukraine; and in the free world. Ukraine is the largst na tion in Europe held captive by So viet Russia. Women of all ages filled the au ditorium; the place was vibrant with their enthusiasm. Many were there who walked slowly back and forth, studying the paintings of Ukrainian artists that lined the walls of the audi torium. Great sheaves of Uk raine’s wheat standing ,in the moonlight, the lea sides blue in the deepening twilight; the por trait of her, with the lovely twin kle in her eye, and the Mona Lisa smile; and the still life, in rich coppers and blues, that show ed the promise in a young girl. In an adjoining room was the large art exhibit of ceramics and embroideries, done in the distinct type of the community in which it was created, from the Hutzul eggs in the Carpathian Mts. to the ceramics in the fastness of the lofty Urals. A large table of fascinating Ukrainian literature awaiting translation, by an avid American public, unskilled in lan guages. Now, with the activities of the Congress stilled, its pattern and purpose are clearly limned for the historian of future years. Behind the brilliant and impassioned speeches, the eager faces, and the sounds in the auditorium are vis ible the main lines followed throughout the proceedings. The resolutions passed were the steps forward, the achievements of the Congress. They stress the posi tion of the Ukrainian woman in her own community, her obliga tions towards her family, her or ganization, and the nation. In them Ukrainian womanhood de clared its basic purpose in calling this world Congress. To an outsider, observing this Congress, with increasing inter est, what highlight did it offer? First, the delegates who foregath ered from four continents, and seven different countries. Many paid their own expenses, as their organizations were too small to cover it. Part of these expenses covered the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organiza tions, for each Ukrainian W o men’s organization was eager to participate in the Congress, and join their efforts in the common work of Ukrainian womanhood. The World Federation consists of fourteen member organizations scattered throughout the world. Wherever Ukrainians have set tled their women have founded an organization to care for their own needs. Many of the newly ar rived, and those born here have become well-to-do. Among them are artists of note; and many hold University degrees. All en joy the freedom of the free world, and are staunch patriots of their new country, although ever mindful of their less fortunate kinsmen in Ukraine. An unquenchable love of Uk raine was the deep undercurrent of the Congress which fused these women delegates of various ages, from different countries and up bringing. They worked for the many Ukrainian families in re fugee camps in Germany and Au stria; they reached out mightily to help Ukrainian women under Soviet Russian rule. The main address of the Congress, given by Mrs. Sulyma-Boyko, Munich, Germany dealt with the unfortun ate position of women in Soviet- dominated Ukraine. The Youth Session directed the attention of women of Ukrainian descent to wards the list of facts, in the op pression of youth in Ukraine. This deep desire — the love for Ukraine, and the endeavor to help her achieve freedom — was the most powerful drive of the Con gress. It was not done by loud slogans or declarations. Instead, the Study Days, held before the opening of the Congress dealt with usual matters like Educa tion, Welfare, Public Relations and Arts. Ukrainian women work as all women do in the free world, in enlightening and helping in their communities. But, the love of their enslaved homeland is the background of their great and constant endeavor, which we all recognize and admire.
