A REPORT ON CONGRESS IN ATHENS The Congress of International W om en’s Alliance held a t A thens, in A ugust of this year, has focus ed the light on the m odern wom an in her role as a civic leader. M rs. N atalia Hladiy, W FU W O ’s dele gate to the C ongress, has prepar ed a detailed report on its p ro cedures, and discussed her post- congressional im pressions at an inform al reception held on O cto ber 19, 1958 by the Paris branch of the U krainian W om en’s A sso ciation of France. TH E PODILLA REGION Podilla, a big plateau in U k raine, is bounded in the southw est by the D niester River, in the N orth by the Buh Valley, and spreads in form of a wide plain far into the E ast. The population is w ealthy, the soil is rich and fertile. But this part of the coun try was m ore open to the outside influence, because over the cen turies m any arm ies and m er chants passed through. This in fluence is reflected in the folk lore. The folk attire of central Podil la is suited to the existing clim ate w ith its hot sum m ers and long, severe w inters. H eavy woolen m a terials, hom espun linen and fur coat are constituent to the folk costume, because they offer enough protection from wind and cold w eather. In addition m any fabrics obtained from the store are used for m aking the com plete outfit. W om en buy m aterial w ith small flow ery design for m aking skirts, cloth for their furcoats, and big beautiful scarfs. They dislike too rich ornam entation and use em broidery only sparsely. H owever they m ust have a big expensive kerchief which they w rap around their heads in the fashion of a turban. They like also to w ear a necklace of heavy coral. T heir furcoats are often ’trim m ed w ith colorful yarn. The folk a t tire is w orn by the wom en of P o dilla w ith dignity and pride. The beauty of this native cos tum e is due m ainly to the ex quisite style and the well chosen m aterials out of which it is made. A G LIM PSE INTO A UKRAINIAN HOME U krainian families in A m erica have tried successfully to give their home the “U krainian look” and atm osphere. Em broidered drapes, curtains and doilies, от even a painting depicting a U k ra inian scene has obtained th e desir ed effect. It is evident th a t the U krainian housew ife finds satis faction in her role as an ingenuous interior decorator w ith unlim ited sources of inspiration. W e urge our readers to send in photographs of their hom es, for on this basis we will be able to judge the ingenuity and taste of the U krainian housew ife. W e are certain th a t these sam ples will arouse enthusiasm and will in fluence other U krainian hom e m akers in interior decorating. A NOTE FOR TENNIS ENTHUSIASTS This sum m er M rs.
