dations are w orking- side by side, if in different ways. The Shev chenko Scientific Society, the old est U krainian institute of .scienti fic research, is now preparing a new U krainian Encyclopedia. The Correspondence School is sending out courses of various educational subjects, notably dealing w ith U k rainian history, literature and language, to subscribers .scatter ed all over the Free W orld. In recent issues of OUR L IF E there appeared a report of the ac tivities of women in this scienti fic center at Sarseille. They are represented in both institutions. M iss ,Sophia Yaniv LL.M, is the secretary of the editorial board which is w riting and editing the U krainian Encyclopedia. She is in charge of card index for the scho larly w ork, is corresponding w ith associate editors, as well as so rt ing the incom ing m aterial. In her hands are concentrated all threads of w ork of th e board. She has been perform ing her task for sev eral years. The first volume of the encyclopedia has already been printed and the other volumes will be ready w ithin a short p e riod of tim e. The Corresponding Institute is an educational agency. Its cou rs es consist of a num ber of lec tures which are being sent out to students who have to pass exam i nations, both w ritten and oral. The institute has special bodies Oif teachers in the countries w here there are large U krainian com m unities. Miss D aria Siak is the secre tary of th e Corresponding School. She is in charge of all correspon dence and relations w ith profes sors and students. A N E W U K R A IN IA N W O M E N ’S C H O IR Branch 28 of U N W LA in N ew ark form ed recently a new w om en’s choir. A small group of m em bers started to practice singing when the branch celebrated its A nniversary. U nder the able and talented director O ksana T arnaw - ska they decided to form a perm a nent singing group and devote its efforts to fostering of U krainian songs. Since then they had oppor tunity to show their skill on dif ferent occasions. T hey w ere in vited by the Regional Council o'f U N W LA to N ew Y ork, w here they took p art in celebrating a D ay of W om an-H eroine. They also gave a very successful p er form ance in Plainfield, N. J., at a recent, opening of U krainian ex hibition at a local library. The m em bers of this singing group make a very favorable im pression w earing blouses em broi dered w ith U krainian designs and long black skirts. S U P E R F IC IA L O P IN IO N The M oiseyev Dance Group which at present stages in differ ent cities of the U nited States and Canada, finds everyw here en th u siastic reception. It is praised above all for the open hum or and friendliness and the sunny exub erance th a t blows through the whole perform ance. The full-bo died girls and the masculine m ale dancers charm the audience. The U krainians and W hite Ru- thenians who had the opportun ity to see the ballet, agree th at it is excellent as far as precision, dram atic flair and physical vir tuosity is concerned. Being ex perts of folk dances they noticed however, th at M oiseyev Dance Group failed in one respect. It m anaged to present fascinating, fast m oving contem porary them es but could not capture the beauty and the spirit of traditional folk dances which are eternalization of a given culture. Its in terp reta tion is shallow and it shows lack of developm ent of national trad i tional dance style. It proves th at the traditional culture and origin al expression of distinct nations under the Soviet can not develop freely. On the other 'hand the Y ugosla vian ballet assembly, which p er form ed recently in New Y ork, ad opted folk dances w ithout losing the vigor and beauty of trad itio n al culture.
