UNWLA Highlights T h e Ukrainian communities throughout the Free W orld celebrated in January the 40th anniversary of reestablishment of independence of Ukraine. T h e commemoration of heroines o f Ukraine is connected with this observance. In 40 years of persistent struggle for freedom of U k raine the Ukrainian women have also suffered enormously. W e are marking the deeds o f heroines of Ukraine in February or March, pay ing homage to their memory. * * T h e Regional Councils of U N W L A are now busily engaged in counting up the new members they had gained during the last half year. Prior to :the next convention, to be held in 1959, each of them ought to win 500 new members, in glorious memory o f those 500 brave women who died under the tanks of N K V D at Kingiri, Kazakhstan. Please, communicate as soon as feasible, the result of this campaign in vour Branch as well as in your Regional Council. * * D id your Branch hold the annual m eeting yet? Pay heed that a Vice-President of U N W L A or President of a Regional Council be in vited to attend vour meeting. j O * * * O n the English pages of O U R LIFE we are presenting brief items which relate its LTkramian contents. W e shall welcome your opinion on this matter. You may suggest what you may wish to read in these pages. U N W L A B R A N C H T A K E S P A R T IN F E S T IV A L A T G A R Y Mrs. Rose Sydoryk, Chairman, Branch 22, Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, in Chicago, 111., has received the fol lowing letter from International Institute at Gary, Indiana: I find it difficult to find words to express our appreciation to you fo the magnificent exhibit which you brought to Gary for the No vember 2 and 3 Festival of the nationality groups of Gary. The exhibit was outstanding and presented Ukrainian culture at its very best. I am sure that the crowds which gathered around your booth attested to the interest and appreciation of all who attended the Festival. The demonstration of Easter Egg dyeing by Miss Vera Straw- niak was also one of the high points of the Festival. I happened to pass by and saw Mr. John Mo- hamed, teacher of art in the Mi chigan City schools, sitting be side the demonstrator, busy prac ticing on an egg of his own. He is of Arab descent and I thought where but in the United States could such a thing happen. Please convey our gratitude to the membership of Branch 22 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League which sponsored the U k rainian exhibit and to all who as sisted you. I also enclose a copy of this letter for Miss Strawniak and for the national office of your organization. Cordially yours, E liza b eth N . W ilso n Executive Secretary A N E W C O L L E C T IO N O F F O L K A R T The Alliance of Ukrainian W o men of England has determined to create, through the efforts of its members, a collection of arti cles of Ukrainian arts. The ac tion has already begun. The bran ches of the Alliance have sent many items. The association bought two showcases, one of which is in the Ukrainian Home at London and the other at Man chester. The collection comprises em broidery, wood carvings, dolls and Easter eggs. Among the embroi dered items are doilies, sofa cu shions, table cloths, and generally articles of domestic use. There are likewise men’s and women’s shirts for folk costumes, as well as parts of such costumes. All the embroi deries were done by the members of the Alliance who are ardently endeavoring to build up the col lection. The Easter eggs are of singular value. These are artistically de signed ritual specimens fashion ed by the same members. Thanks to the efforts of the Alliance the collection will be continually enlarged. After it is completed i.e. after it will contain the items from all fields of U k rainian folk art, it will be donated to one of the museums of Eng land.
