THE STATUE OF LESSYA UKRAINKA Several nationality groups, and the Ukrainians among them, in Cleveland, Ohio, were given lots of Rockefeller P ark to serve as their national cultural gardens. Hence these groups have been trying, as best 'they could, to em bellish their allotm ents. The Ukrainian community of Cleveland set up in its garden the statues of Taras Shevchenko in 1934, of St. Vladimir the G reat in 1935, and of Ivan Fran- ko in 1938. All these busts are the w ork of famed Ukrainian sculp tor, Alexander Archipenko. The Ukrainians also built a gate at the entrance to the garden. A t its poles are tw o reliefs of two fam ous Ukrainian personages — Boh- dan Khm elnitsky and Michael H rushevsky. Recently the Ukrainian women of Cleveland have initiated a cam paign to erect the statue of Les- sya U krainka in this garden. The greatest Ukrainian poetess who so ardently and earnestly intro duced the motive of struggle for freedom into the Ukrainian liter ature, deserves such commemo ration in this country of the free. The special com m ittee which has this task to give effect to, has asked Mr. Chereshniovsky, the noted U krainian sculptor, to pre pare a project for the bust. He came to the U krainian Gardens, selected a spot for the statue and has already started his work. Mrs. Gatherine M ural is the President of the committee. was recognized as a full partici pant.
