15th ANNIVERSARY By this time the 15th anniver sary is noted of the death of a young fighter liquidated by the Gestapo. She was Halina Stolar who a’t 20 had joined the O rgani zation of U krainian Nationalists (OUN). H er ardent patriotism brought her into the ranks of fighters. As a member of OUN she was arrested, along with oth ers, by bolsheviki in 1940. A fter long investigation and trial of 59 memlbrs of OUN, many of these boys and girls were sentenced either to death or to long impris onment. However, when the w ar broke out and the Germans were advancing toward the east, those imprisoned were set free. But this state of affairs did not satisfy Halina. She rejoined the organization and was sent by it 'to Germany where she was broupht into contact with U k rainian workers forcefully taken bv the Nazis to toil for the Ger man war industry. Gestapo' dis covered her action and arrested her again. She died during the scathing examination in Novem ber 1942, yet she did not divulge the .names of her associates. H er memory is marked by U k rainian women as of one of many victims of hostile regimes of in vaders. She had chosen the active fighting for Ukraine as the mis sion of her life and paid with it for her devotion to this mission. MRS. ROOSEVELT ON USSR At the invitation of the N a tional Council of Women, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, reported re cently in New York on her trip to USSR. She introduced her talk to the capacity audience by saying that she would not and could not speak as an authority on the Soviet Union, that she could merely tell how it looked to her. A fterw ards she reviewed various spheres of way of life in USSR, similarly as she did in her newspaper articles. On some aspects she elaborated, e.g. upon housing. It is terrible, she said. The usual and accepted housing pattern is one family per room. A 4 room apartm ent has 4 families living in it and sharing 1 bathroom and 1 kitchen. This in many cases, means as many as 12 to 16 people in 4 rooms. She stated also that the Soviet citizens whom she met, were much aware of the censorship and restrictions on associations with foreigners. L etters are often giv en to travelers to be mailed out side USSR. The Soviet people, said Mrs. Roosevelt, are interest ed in the United States and ask many questions about daily life here. Mrs. Alexander Riznyk, P resi dent of Branch 33 of UNWLA, represented our organization at the gathering.
