Olenka Hlibovich, foundress and conductor of the female quartet “Verkhovina” at Toronto, Ont. The Contest of Baking Best "Paska" “Paska” — is a special ritual E aster bread which is obligatory on the Ukrainian E aster table. The Ukrainian hostesses have al ready brought to perfection the a rt of baking this sweet bread, known for its exquisite delicious- nes.s. However, its prime im por tance is its shape and appearance since it has to conform to ancient ceremonial. The UNW LA Branch No. 26 at Detroit, Michigan, conducted, be fore the last Easter, a contest among its members of baking the best “paska.” Tw enty E aster breads were at the contest. All were of excellent dough and bak ed very well. This proves that these U krainian women, who came to the United States as young girls, have already in their youth acquired this art from their mothers. The com m ittee which marked off the “paskas,” took notice of the appearance of the breads, namely of the form of a “paska” and its ornaments. All these or nam ents have symbolic m eaning (crosses, curls, crow n), and have been arranged in a variety of ways all over Ukraine. The com m ittee selected five “paskas” which in shape and features were w ithout reproach. Those were baked by Mrs. Anna Pyndyk (born in the United States), Mrs. Julia Kulchitska, Mrs. Anastasia Demyan, Mrs. M aria Drohom iret- ska, and Mrs. Catherine Vivchar- ska. FEMALE QUARTET “VERKHOVINA” Four years ago several young Ukrainian artists at Toronto, On tario, Canada, formed into a group which set as its goal to de vote its efforts to fostering the U krainian songs. Olenka Hlibo vich. a young musician, who had already appeared before as a con ductor, was the soul of the group. H aving found four voices of si m ilar force, she organized a quar tet. These were the singers: N a dia Lysaniuk, Miroslava Brezden, Sophia Pidruchna and Tam ara Kossach. Stephanie Kloss, a young pianist, added the musical background. This body began to sing on the radio and at musical presenta tions. A fter a number of success es, Verkhovina has been arrang ing its own concerts, finally em barking on a tour through Canada and United States, where it has always been welcomed heartily. THE CONFERENCE OF INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN The Conference of Internation al Council of Women, which took place at Quebec, Canada, from June 5 through 15, has stirred up an interest among the organized Ukrainian women. The W orld Federation of U krainian W om en’s Organizations (W FUW O) delegated several members of its governing body: Mrs. Irene Pav- likovska, Dr. Natalie Pazunyak and Mrs. Catherine Peleshok. As members of the United States and Canada delegations were participating in the Confer ence the Presidents of two U k rainian central women’s organiza tions which are affiliated w ith the National Councils of W omen of both countries, Mrs. Helen Lo- totsky, deputy president of W F UW O and President of UNW LA, Mrs. Stephanie Savchuk, Presi dent of the Organization of U k rainian W omen of Canada, and Mrs. Sophia Vassilishin, P resi dent of the Association of U krain ian W omen of Canada.
