At the Conference of Internatianal Council of Women. Dr. Jean Eder, former President (left), and Madam Marie Helene Lafaucheux, newly elected President. Two Presidents of International Council of Women Shortly before the triennial -conference of the International Council of W om en last June at M ontreal, Quebec, Canada, it be came known that its President, Dr. Jeanne Eder, was not going to' run for reelection on account of her poor health. It has been interesting to m eet this outstanding- figure. Tall, skinny, advanced in age, grey headed, but young in spirit this known scholar commands general respect. Her self-possessed and composed approach and radiating spiritual strength qualifies her for a leader. She 'had taken the (presidency of ICW after W orld W ar II, fol lowing the disruption a t the con ference in 1947 when the ICW had lost ten members, the nations which then found themselves be hind the Iron Curtain. However, during her term the membership has increased from 2 7 to 39 N a tional Councils of W omen. The U krainian W om en in em i gration, organized in the Associa tion of Ukrainian W omen, have frequently called on her when ever they had any difficulties to overcome, and they have been stances when she carefully and friendly examined their cases and argum ents. H ard times, incessant hesita tions in the world, the contest be tween tw o forces, the emergence of new powers in the East and in Africa present the problems that demand considerable physical strength and energy from the new President. And when I first saw the can didate for new President, a dis tinguished young lady in black who presents a contrast to the celebrated personage of Dr. Jeanne Eder, I asked myself w hether this small French lady, Madame Lafaucheux, is not as suming too heavy a task for her feeble shoulders. And right then I felt that I ought to talk w ith her and find out how she regards the problems of ICW. Madame Lafaucheux is a very busy lady, hence I took advantage when she was having Iher break fast in the cafeteria. In a brief conversation I have found out that she has begun her public work after W orld W ar II. She was active in the countries of N orth Africa which w ere under the protectorate of France. She is a member of French Parliam ent and has repeatedly opposed vari ous measures of the government. Ever since 1945 she has been a delegate of France to U nited Nations. From 1953 on she has been the President of the N a tional Council of W omen of France and has been at th e head of the French delegation at the conference in M ontreal. To my question, w hat does she consider the chief object now fac ing the ICW, she emphasized the participation of women in public life and comprehending the prob lems at issue, particularly th at of assistance needed; by th e w o men of Africa and Asiia who are confronted by serious difficulties of ancient national custom s. True, they possess their civic rights in their lands, but th e prob lem of education of women is still not solved there, similary that of wages, overpopulation, as well as of the prejudice of fellow country men against the progress am ong women. A fter the conference in Canada she is to embark on a journey to the islands under French pro tectorate. While conversing with Madame Lafaucheux one becomes aw are of her spiritual forcefulness and grasping of the problems on a vast scale. She is middle-aged but vigorous and possessing great feeling for social problems. H er appearances a t the confer ence accentuated great experience and commanded respect of the audience. The International Council of W omen has gotten a new (Pre sident who may be 'entrusted with great responsibilities and who is equal to her task. W e welcome Madame L afau cheux in this lofty and respons ible position and wish her success in her im portant work. Irene Pavlikovska
