UNWLA Highlights At the coming October conferences of the Regional Councils of UNWLA we shall take up the most im portant current m atters. The gatherings ought to 'be attended by as many UNW LA members as possible so they may better elucidate the problems at issue. A regional conference will surely serve the Branches to learn to know better one another and to w ork closer w ith the Central Office of our Organization. The letters received through underground channels from Soviet labor camps inmates, had a penetrating response among Ukrainians all over the Free W orld. Let our members likewise take interest in the voice from behind the Iron Curtain, from our innocently m artyred and silenced sisters and brothers. The Branches may mention at their m eetings these tortured hu mans and devote a few moments to reading about their lot and strug gle. There are some articles and reports in English about these letters. Soon annual meetings of the UNW LA Branches will be held all over the country. The date for the m eeting is probally set already in your Branch, and preparations are being made for this im portant yearly gathering. The Branches may invite to their m eetings Vice-Presidents or members of Regional Councils, so as to enhance their mutual coopera tion. We are sending out a circular on most im portant present-day problems of our Organization. Kindly have it read carefully at the next m eeting and do invite discussion of the problems presented therein. This fall is the time for starting anew our work more intensively so that it may bring fruitful results. Soyuz Ukrainok, Branch 22, Chicago As President of the Ukrainian National W om en’s League of America, Branch 22 in Chicago, I feel that Ukrainian women throughout America should be in formed of wdiat we women can accomplish, if we make the ef fort. This is what we have done so far this year. January In preserving and encouraging Ukrainian tradition, the women of our group went caroling dur ing the U krainian holiday season. Not only did we do our part in preserving our tradition, but were able to raise almost $100, part of which we contributed to the UNW LA Home, in Philadel phia, the balance 'being sent to Europe to help U krainian o r phans. Every Saturday evening, our Radio Committee spoke on the radio. February During this month we present ed a lecture honoring Olga Basa- rab, Ukrainian heroine. And all through the m o n t h our Radio Committee gave a series of talks about the many Ukrainian hero ines. the examples they had set for us, and on our obligations to ward them. March A very successful Tea P arty was held during this month, and more than $300 were raised to help finance our Ukrainian tasks, sending packages to Europe, helping the Ukrainian orphans, etc. O'ur radio program s were al so very successful and inform a tive. April Being close to our traditional E aster season, we felt it was our obligation to hold a class instruct ing Ukrainian women in the art of making the Pysanka (U krain ian E aster Egg). This class was held on April 17th and Avas very successful. D uring this month our branch sent letters to our Congressmen and Senators, supporting U krain ian resolutions and inform ation that was printed in the Congres sional Record. W e sent many let ters and have received many en couraging replies from our na tional capital.
