UNWLA Highlights The- Central Office of UNW LA .has recently sent out an abridged circular in English. Be sure to have it read at your next meeting. It is imperative for the Branches to be versed in the activities of our Organization. The. Branch Officers are, no doubt, getting ready with prepara tions for annual meeting. Having set the date, they should invite one of Vice-Presidents of UNW LA and the 'President of the Region al Council of your district. They will expound the objectives o i our Organization and will be glad to hear your reports and listen to your discussions. While sending your reports of tihe yearly meeting to OUR LIFE — whi-di ought to 'be done by every Branch — do not fail to check whether your Branch has lately contributed to the Press Fund of our magazine. Without hearty aid if the members of UNWLA the peri odical could not exist, much less grow and progress. Our action to assist the hard core D P’s who have remained in Germany up till now, has been closed successfully. The UNW LA Branches signed 62 assurances which means that almost each of them has facilitated one Ukrainian family to come over and settle in. the United States. The United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC) advised us that the families which have received assurances from our Branches, have now started to arrive in this country. We should lend them assistance in finding lodging and securing work. SOYUZ UKRAINOK, BR. 22, CHICAGO, ILL. (Conclusion) On April 29th our women held a fund raising campaign to help Ukrainian orphans in Europe. Mrs. Mary Kuritza, our W elfare Committee Chairman, is to be complimented for her splendid display of the Ukrainian spirit, for she directed this Orphan Raising Fund in a downpour of rain. The “forget me nots” that she and the rest of our women pinned in Ukrainians in Chicago, had a real meaning . . . we in America have not forgotten our children in Europe, and Chicago Ukrainians poured out more than $400 to help them. May During May the Ukrainian w o men throughout America honor ed the 54) Ukrainian heroines who sacrificed their lives in a communist concentration camp in Kazakhstan. Chicago papers did not mention this fact, and as a protest we sent letters to the newspapers. The result . . . the Chicago American printed the letter on May 2nd, 1956. In addition, Mrs. Natalie Kami- netska, the Chairman of our Ra dio Committee, is to be compli mented for the wonderful job her Committee is doing. Their Ra dio Program heard every Satur day evening has received many compliments from Ukrainians in Chicago. And so 1956 rolls on . . . just think how much good all of us can do. for America and for Uk raine. This report is just a sam ple of what YOU can do . . . if you try. Mrs. Rose Sydoryk Pres. Branch 11. IMMIGRATION LAWS President Eisenhower express ed the need for a Republican 85th Congress if liberalization of our immigration laws is ever to be achieved. He cited the record of the Republican Party in its ef forts to open wider the gates of America to immigrants whose predecessors have contributed so much to our country’s giod and called attention to the consistent blocking of these efforts by the Democrats, particularly by the Democratic-conrtolled 84th Con gress which scuttled the Presi dent’s program of liberalizing our immigration laws.
