ENTHUSIASTIC OVER THE WORK OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN The follow ing letter, received by Mrs. Helen Lototsky from Mrs. Jean Wolcott Piper, erpress- es her ardent feeling over the activities of Ukrainian women the world over, after reading the book “The Woman of Ukraine.” Mrs. Jean Wolcott Piper, a columnist and author, has been a warm friend of the Ukrainian National Women’s League ever since 1932 when as a columnist of the daily Brooklyn Eagle she became interested in Ukraine and Ukrainian people, its his tory, literature and arts. A t present she resides at Iron River, Michigan. Dear H elen : If ever you could know what joy “W oman of Ukraine” has brought me. I have read and re read it, and wished that I -might have the privilege of knowing each of the women photographed in it. It will go into my prized Ukrainian book nook, along with Shevchenko, and the rest. To think that it was UNW LA who made possible that “United We Stand” all over the earth. To say this is “a monumental piece of work” does not describe it. Ra ther it is the creation of a living thing, a union o f women for com mon good, and freedom for U k raine that will go on and on and on, a haven for women in distant places. In it they can find the comradeship and inspiration they need, and give of their talents-, a place of perfect trust for the w o men of Ukraine, who have known nothing for centuries save mental distress from cruel conquerors. The format of the book is ex cellent; and the design most in terests n-g, especially the covier. Maria Zankovetska looking out from., the- golden, full-headed w h e a t. Zankovetska, geared for a stellar role in the theatre of the world, yet reserving her genius that she might interpret the so-ul of Ukraine, and weave together the many threads in the pattern of a people, who have retained inviolate the fine, distinctive eth nic qualities given to them by' the Creator. Other ethnic groups, more fa vorably circumstanced than the Ukrainians have .Lost much of their original identity at the first onslaught of travail. Not so the Ukrainians. I do not recall ever seeing so many women of such a high type as these women of Ukraine. To say that oppression brought out the best in them is not to answer tihe question of why they are so fine, so resolute. My belief is that they are a dis tinct type of women in the world. In other ethnic groups some women will rise and lead her own, in a crisis, and then sink back into the masses. Not so the Ukrainian woman. Here it is a great band of women, all hav ing the same basic capacity, all capable of excelling in any field of human knowledge to which they., may., turn- their energy.. Could this faculty be due to the fact that tlhere has 'been no cessa tion in their struggle for national freedom? Most nations flare up, struggle for their freedom, either are vanquished or emerge victori ous and know respite. Not so the Ukrainians. They are continually keyed for struggle. Another thing that arrests rny attention is the fact that all these women, and some of them have long since passed on, have about them an ageless look quite apart from their chronological age, or; physical appearance. I confess I do not quite understand it. But you feel that these women, this type of woman has nothing to do With time, as we now know it, but that she moves on some time cycle above and apart from our ken. I am speaking of the Ukrain ian woman collectively. It is the look in their eyes that is so un forgettable. It marks them as a group of earth-women who ap-; pear to be on some Divine and special destiny of good that may have its source in Lessya Ukra- inka's Ukraine entire could sink And in tears drown Enough have trickled down or it may be in the unfolding plan of the universe this Ukrainian1 woman carries out some purpose, planned from the beginning. Their common tragedy may have fused them, but it took something more: than that to put that look into; their eyes. What Lessya has Said of Ukraine co:uld also be said with truth about other ethnic groups,: but no solid group of women has arisen in any other ethnic quarter O U R LIFE Edited by Editorial Board Published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America* Inc* 909 N.
