UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN THE PRICE OF LIBERTY (Excerpts from an address at the X I Convention of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America) We are commemorating- this year tihe thousandth anniver sary of the beginning of Christia nity in Ukraine, notably since Princess Olga embraced the Christian- faith. A millennium lias gone by since Christ's teachings have been shining over Ukraine. However, we may celebrate this anniversary solely outside the li mits of our native land. The bol shevik government in Ukraine de stroyed the Ukrainian Church, letting only its wreitdied rem nants to lead a vegetating exist ence,. The persecution of the Church in Ukraine started the aggression of bolshevism against the Ukrain ian nation. After this spiritual foundation 'had been taken away, it seemed to bolsheviki that it would be then easier to rend the body of Ukraine asunder. Step by step followed the liquidation of Ukrainian cultural workers and scholars, Ukrainian intelligentsia, and above all the destruction of Ukrainian villages through a fraudulent man-made famine. In that disaster the women have suffered most. Tihe bolshe vik government strove to smash the family which blow wounded them most severely. The bolshe vik і tried to limit their education al influence on the children and deprived them of their essential task. The reds have likewise been misusing the slogan of equality of women with men so as to load the most burdensome and oppres sive work on women, such as dig ging in the mines, loading and un loading, road conistru-cftion and paving of streets. The Ukrainian woman is now passing the harsh est and most merciless test of her moral and physical endurance. At such a weighty moment, as far as the enslaved peoples are concerned, red Moscow is tossing a proposal to the Free World of “■co-existence,” so called. Confer ences are being held, agreements, or understandings, are being made and the world heaves a sigh of relief hoping for steady peace. The “grinning” diplomacy is win ning ever wider circles of adher ents. The Ukrainians are likewise longing for peace. Two world wars, waged on our lands, were too heavy a blow to the Ukrain ian people to wish for a third Avar,. Still the humankind connot be contented with mere disarmament and agreements in order to enjoy peace,. To that end a real and pro found respect for freedom and civil rights of humans is inalien ably necessary. Freedom is man’s greatest trea sure. The desire for freedom is so potent within the human being and the community that it was in strumental in overthrowing states and long-established governments as well as time-honored systems. Millions of men and women sacri ficed their lives struggling for li berty,. Let us recall America's war for independence and against the colonial exploitation by England, or India’s prolonged struggle against British domination. The position of these peoples had been much weaker than that of the mighty and strongly armed adver sary, yet they had been inspirited by the ardor and passion for they had been fighting for freedom and righteousness. Let us, then, weigh the ques tion : Can there be a firm peace in the world when it is half free and half slave ? The women of other nations under bolshevik subjugation are suffering, togeth er with men, the same enslave ment as docs- the Ukrainian wom an. The foreigners visiting the realm of captive nations, known as USSR, may note the effect of the terroristic regime when a person in the street is dreading to approach an alien, or talk to him, or invite him to his dwelling. And they probably are not aware of the fact that the Soviet cap tives are horrified when they re ceive a letter from abroad as they may expect a loathsome visit by MVD (NKVD). What kind of a peace could be proposed to the world when there are tyrants and slaves, the ruling and the subjugated nations? Sooner or later the balance of the world will break down and all wrath and indignation of those enslaved will leap into flames of a new catastrophe,. Such a “co-exis- tence,” bought for a moment, may prove too expensive to the free world. For it may bring merely a fleeting contentment to the peo ples tired of hot and cold Avars. It may serve as a “breathing space” for the satraps of bolshevism, only to strengthen them «so that their plan of world domination may come true. What, then, should be the posi tion of the Ukrainian woman in such a complex situation? What could the Ukrainian women, scat tered the free world over, do to ward the attainment of a just and lasting peace? The first prerequisite is* our or ganization. When all of us shall join its ranks, we surely shall present a mightier force than we possess at the time being. And should we support its objectives, we shall enable it to better fulfill its mission,. Then there will be our own homes not alone in 'Phila delphia but also in every Ukrain ian community in the United Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
