Hutsulia The Hutsuls ,or West Ukrain ian highlanders, inhabit the strip of Ukrainian Carpathians, from Solotvina to Suchava Rivers. This small branch of Ukrainian people possesses distinguishing charac teristics of its own as far as its dialect, customs, husbandry and Hutzulian man in native costume in 1947, which completed her ed ucational endeavor for Ukrainian girls. It is serving as the higher educational institution for the graduates from the Academy. Mother Superior Josaphata died on July 12, 1954, at the age of 76. She left a great work which has become an enormous educa tional factor in the life of U krain ian com m unity in United States. The students who remember Mother Superior Josaphata will come to Fox Chase , to take part in the reverence paid her memory. outer appearance are concerned. The Hutsulian dress is renown ed for its picturesqueness. Since it is most colorful in West Uk raine, we begin our delineation with it In this short account we can give merely a main sketching, hoping to complement it with pic tures. The dress of Ilutsul woman consists of similar component parts as elsewhere in Ukraine. In winter time she binds her head with a kerchief, while in summer the girl walks bare-headed, yet a married woman always wears a kerchief as a head covering. On her neck is a necklace to which on holidays she also adds a “zgar- da,” i.e. a little hand-made copper chain with crosses. She puts on a white home-spun shirt which has a cut similar to all shirts in Uk raine. This shirt, falling below the knees, has a narrow’ collar and sleeves folded at cuffs (dudi). Over the shirt she puts 2 “zapas- ki” to cover the lower part of bod}'. These are oblong pieces of woolen cloth, red, green or or ange, one O'f which is tied by a cord in the back while the other one is bound in the front. Both ends reach each other, and a little division is left on one side. These “zapaski” are fastened waist high with a “krayka.” “Krayka” is or namentally weaved woolen belt. A Hutsul woman wears stockings, either made of woolen cloth or knitted of yarn, which reach to knees. After, she puts on “posto- li,” i.e. hand-made shoes of ox hide of light color. In the mountain climate the wo man needs an adequate protection against cold weather- Hence the Hutsul woman wears throughout the year a sleeveless fur “kiptar.” This is a flat vest of sheepskin, with the hair downward, buttoned up in the front. The silhouette of a Hutsul wo man may appear bulky since the taut material and severe climate do not permit light clothing tight ly fitted. Her dress is short be cause as she treads mountain paths, she cannot wear a long garment. ‘‘Kiptar” and outer gar- Hutzulian woman in native costume ment broaden her waist, and the wide wrapping of her head com pletes these contours. However, her inborn gracefulness, easy walk, and appreciation of colors, grant her silhouette full case al though at first sight she m ight have appeared too clumsy. The entire dress of a Ilutsul woman is richly ornamented. The shirt, the “kiptar,” even stockings are embroidered, the “zapaski” and “krayka” have designs, even the leather of her shoes is embel lished. The tendency toward vivid colors appears in the kerchiefs which is usually red, yellow, green or orange. A Hutsul woman festively dressed is a resemblance v>f a picturesque canvas against che background, of green hills. In another article we shall dwell on the outer garment of the men of Hutsulia. L. B.
