UKRAINIAN WOMAN OUR ENGLISH COLUMN THE COM ING CONGRESS IN CEYLON The International Women’s Al liance is to hold its congress for the first time in Asia. This will be an outstanding- event. In order to prepare for the gathering and to reach mutual understanding, the women of south-eastern Asian countries called a conference at Colombo in 1954. It was the first time that the Asian womanhood jointly reflected upon their needs and problems. Now the congress of Interna tional Women's Alliance is going to unfold its extensive plans. The delegates from the world over will deliberate on the problems of Asia. The main themes of the con gress will be —■ education o>f wo men, family life, and laws regard ing the rights of women. In Asia these problems are far from be ing solved and thus are in urgent need for elucidation,. The family life, in particular, for it is still be- ing guided by ancient patriarchal laws and customs. Since the tran sition from agricultural husband ry to industrialization is shaking down the old system of Asian peoples, a cautious and thoughtful assistance is needed. The congress will likewise con sider the general issues on which it is working for 50 years. They concern primarily the peace of the world and its preservation. It is a job for a long run, however, it belongs in the sphere of woman hood. Also equal standard of mor ality of high order for both men and women will be dwelt upon. The United Nations are already leading a successful struggle in this field, which, too, will be dis cussed and appraised in Ceylon. At the conference of Asian wo men at Colombo a representative of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations was pres ent as an observer. Mrs,. Nadia Shekhovich is residing in Ceylon and she is aware of living condi tions of Asian women. Thus she welcomed the opportunity of at tending an assemblage of Asian women striving hard to solve their burning questions. As a rep resentative of the people who are treading the thorny road to liber ation, she shared mutuality with the women who only recently suc ceeded in traversing this course. Since this is a jubilee congress of the International Women’s Al liance, so much more weight will be attached to it and its decisions, and we are gratified that Ukrain ian representatives will be there. The Ukrainian organized women had been cooperating with the In ternational Women’s Alliance, as well as supporting its endeavors during the short period of sham peace from 1920 to 1939. The Ukrainian organized wom anhood has 70 years of their work behind them which striving has always been closely bound with Ukrainian people’s struggle for fredom and independence,. Our country, too, had its transition from agricultural way of life to industrialization, and it has en dured torturous experiments and extreme terror of the bolshevik government, which suffering may now serve as a warning to free countries. The World Federation of Uk rainian Women’s Organizations has received an invitation to take part in the jubilee congress in Ceylon, and our world league will aptly be represented by Mrs. Na dia Shekhovich of Ceylon and Mrs. Olena Prociuk of Sydney, Australia. panding the convent and its schools. Due to her efforts the Academy for Ukrainian girls was establish ed in 1931. The convent having since grown^ the Sisters have been taking over the teaching in the schools within the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Diocese. Mother Superior was steadily consolidat ing the educational work in order to embrace most of Ukrainian children, already born in United States, in their school system. Thanks to her efforts the Man or College for girls was founded ‘ STUDENTS TO COMMEMORATE THEIR GREAT EDUCATOR
