У своїй передмові автор зя- совуе свій намір. Він хоче на близити читача до природи та її мешканців — пернатих чи во лохатих, що заселюють ліси й поля України. Вони не тільки схожі на людину — „думають, люблять, радіють і сумують але всі вони, як люди — „ці нять волю, ненавидять насиль ство, боряться за своє існуван ня і за право радіти життям". І справді, в зібраних нарисах оживають вони перед нами. У першому з них автор розправ ляється з охотою 'полювання, що опанувала малого хлопчи ну. Він складає обітницю, що буде захищати тварини перед їх безсердечними ворогами. Він зводить рушеицю Тільки на' жорстоку 'ВИ Д РУ , що нищить безпощадно малих тіеркунят. А в дальших нарисах ожива ють самі тварини. Почина ються грізним вовком і пере ходить через серну, куницю до домашнього пса й -кота. А з пернатого царства представля ють нам сойку-штукарку, гаву і посполитого горобчика. Кож не з них живе окремим своїм життям. У взаєминах із люди ною показує свої прикмети, до брі і злі, корисні й шкідливі. Та найціннішою прикметою цієї книжки те, що в ній юний читач пізнає українську приро ду. Так цікаво й лриманливо описане її життя, так живо бє з кожної сторінки її подих, що й дорослий читач із радістю її перелистує. Трапляються й людські постаті — пасічник Панько, рибалка Марко, лісни чий, пастух Федь, а передусім дідусь Кость, що вмів оповіда ючи „малювати мов словами". Всі воїни допомагають відтво рити той світ, що розгортався на полях і лугах нашої бать ківщини. Ілюстрації П. Холодного о- живляють книжку, надаючи кожній тварині свого окремого виразу. Л. Б.
