in the congress at Prague. Its delegation was led by Blanca Baranova. 1928—The Ukrainian women take first steps to take part in parliamentary election in Poland. Two women were elected on the ticket of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party, Olena Kisilevska a sen ator and Milena Rudnitska, a member of the diet. 1929 __ In S oviet U kraine a secret organization was formed, named the Union for Liberation of Uk raine. The bolshevik occupants arrested the leaders of the Union and staged a display trial with the mass attendance «of the populace. One of the accused and sentenced was a well known author and patriot Ludmila Staritska Chernyakhivska, who had been a member of the First Ukrainian parliament at Kiev in 1917. .She did not bow or recant and faced the bolshevik occupants defiantly. She received the sen tence calmly and with dignity. Thus she became as one of the symbols of fortitude of Ukrainian women. 1931—The first Ukrainian political women’s organization was created in Lviw, named Women’s Center which was connected with the socialist group. It was led by Ivanna Blazhkevich. In the same year there was called the first con ference of Ukrainian women of Bukovina, then un der Rumania. At that gathering, held in Czerno- witz, Olga Huzar and Michaela Levitska delivered their addresses. From Galicia came to that meeting Olena Kisilevska and Ivanna Blazhkevich. 1934 —The first congress of Ukrainian women of Carpat'ho-Ukraine, then under Czechoslovakia, was held in Uzhorod. Its initiator was Irene Ne- vitska. It was a great and impressive manifestation of Ukrainian women of this forgotten Ukrainian province. In Stanislaviv, Galicia, the first general con gress of Ukrainian women was held, on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of founding of the first Uk rainian women’s society. Representatives of many Ukrainian women’s organizations from various countries attended this congress. It was called by the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Lviw under leadership of Milena Rudnitska. In this year also the O lga Basarab O rganization of U krainian W om en of Canada w as established Winnipeg, Manitoba. 1935 __ A n ew organ ization for w om en tarm ers was formed. It was affiliated with a central Ukrain ian organization named Village Economist. The ob jective of that affiliation was to elevate the profes sional dexterity of women farmers, as well as to as sist them in attaining general education. It was un- der direction of senator Olena Kisilevska. In this year the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Lviw started the publication of its periodical “Zhinka” (The Woman), dedicated to Ukrainian feminist movement. 1937—At the initiative of the Ukrainian Wo men’s Association of Lviw the World Union of Uk rainian Women was (organized which was linking together the majority of the Ukrainian women’s or ganizations then existant. The president of the Uk rainian Women’s Association in Lviw was to be the president of the World Union. 1938—The Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada becomes a member of the National Council of Women of Canada. 1939—Because of World War II and terrorism of bolshevik occupation all Ukrainian women’s or ganizations in the western Ukrainian provinces were dissolved. The Ukrainian women were thus prevented from working as organized groups, still they could not remain inactive in time of great emergency of the people. Ukrainian women took their part in the activities of Ukrainian welfare and aid societies, permitted by the occupants, and some joined the underground revolutionary movement to take part in the active struggle against the invaders. They suffered hardships and had many casual ties. The bolshevik occupants exiled to Siberia and Kazakhstan the Ukrainian patriot Daria Shukhe- vich Starosolska, Maria Vesolovska and many oth ers. The Nazi occupants arrested and executed Ox ana Neduzha in Kharkikv, Dr. Hanna Roshchinska in Kremyanets, Dr. Charita Kononenko in Rivne, Lessya Pidhirska in Kovel and Olena Teliha in Kiev. 1944—During the last war the Ukrainian wo men’s organizations in the Western Hemisphere be came stronger and more vigorous. They were as sisting the Red Cross in United States and Canada, and were everywhere abreast of women whose sons and daughters were serving the cause of freedom. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, with headquarters in Philadelphia, started the publication of its press organ "Nashe Zhittya” (Our Life) in Philadelphia which now has subscrib ers throughout the whole free world. 1945—Toward the end iof the war, when bol sheviki were advancing westward, thousands of ci vilian population were fleeing to Western Europe, notably to the parts of Germany then occupied by United States, England and France. About 200,000 Ukrainians escaped from the bolshevik terrorism. The Ukrainian women, DP’s, called their first conference in Aschaffenburg, Germany, in Decem ber 1945, where they constituted the Alliance of Ukrainian Women in emigration under guidance of Mrs. Irene Pavlikovska. 1947—The Organization of Ukrainian Women of Canada became a member of the National Coun cil of Women of Canada* Miss Hanka Romanchich, Vice-President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, was a delegate to the congress of the International Coun cil of Women, held in Philadelphia. 1948—The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America called the first post-war world congress of Ukrainian women in Philadelphia. The delegates from United States, Canada and Western Europe attended the gathering. The congress created the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organiza tions (W FUW O) and elected Madam Olena Kisilev ska its President.
