THE UKRAINIAN PRINCESS HANNA The pallid leaves of the old Ukrainian chronicles give clear principal features of one of pro minent figures of Middle Ages in Ukraine, the Princess Hanna, wife of Prince Roman. The U kra inian women are at tihe present time inquiring* into these annals with special interest since they reveal the picture of the mother of the Ukrainian King Daniel Ro manovich who received the crown from the West, from 'the Pope of Rome, in recognition of his re sistance to the Turco-Tartar 'in vasions. This date ils- now singled out -by the Ukrainians throughout .the free world. Because of continuous aggres sions by the Asian nomads the center of the Ukrainian national life had been transferred in the twelfth century to the western Ukrainian lands where reigned Prince Roman who united the western Ukrainian provinces and formed strong defensive bulwarks against Mongolian invaders. However, he was bound at the same time to ward off encroach- wents of his western neighbors. He died in 1205 in the battle with a Polish Prince who was trying to take the Ukrainian province's under his sway. At that time appeared on the political -s»cene Princesis Hanna, Roman’s widow and mother of two smaM boys, Daniel and Basil. She undertook a grave task — to struggle to save and preserve the Ukrainian state. For there was a real danger since the neighboring Princes, taking advantage of Ro man’s death, were trying to usurp the power in the W estern U kra inian provinces. A mortal danger to the Princi pality as well as to the widow and her sons, in particular to Daniel, who was the legitimate heir to the throne. Hanna was forced to flee abroad, to the Polish King. Afterwards- she left her son Dan iel with the Hungarian King and returned home to continue the contention for her son’s prerog atives. She used all possible chan nels to reach her goal. At last, wi'th the assistance of Volhynian noblemen (iboyars) who remained loyal to the legit imate dynasty, Princess Hanna brought her son Daniel from Hungary. Still she had to continue struggling for long time for her son’s throne. She established her home in Volhynia where she lived with her sons and made repeated attempts to attain her aim. In 1212 Daniel married the daughter of the Prince of Halich and thuis became the heir to the throne of this* province. Then Princess Hanna term i nated her civilian life, full of dra matic moments and significance, and entered a convent where she remained for 34 years, until her death. The annals testify that she was following her son’s activities even from the convent. And when in 1253 Daniel was* hesitating about his momentous -step and turned to his mother for advice, she counseled him to ally by treaty with the Pope, to unite the country and to accept the crown. The historians attest that King Daniel was largely indebted to his mother Hanna for the restora tion of the Western Ukrainan state. Treading the dangerous road to her goal, owing to her natural sense and diplomatic S'kill, her perseverance in the decision to reclaim the might of the state of her husband, — Hanna finally reached her end and saw in her declining years the Ukrainian Gali'cian-Volhynian state reunited under her son Daniel’s rule. P. A NOTED UKRAINIAN MOTHER IS DEAD Julia Pisareva, a prominent Ukrainian educator, died recently in London. She had been perse cuted by the bolshevik govern ment, and her children had been forcibly taken- away from her and exiled to distant north. In her last years she had been writing much about the plight of mothers under the bolshevik regime. We owe to her knowledge the UKRAINIAN DISHES Cabbage with Tomatoes 1 medium head ca-bbage, shredded 1 cup boiling water 1 lb. fresh tomatoes, scalded, peeled and quartered. (a 16 oz. can of tomatoes may be substituted) 1 medium onion, chopped fine 1 T. bacon fat or butter Уг cup sour cream 1 T. flour Salt and pepper to taste Boil cab age in the water for 20 minute's. Drain well. Melt fat, and br о win on in os in it slightly. A'dd the tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the well-drained cabbage and bring to a boil. Blend sour cream and flour and add to mixture and aigain bring to a boil. Season to- taste and serve. Boiled Fish and Vegetables 2 cups mixed diced fresh vegetables 4 cups water 1 bay leaf У 4 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. salt ІУ 2 lbs. fresh fish* 2 T. butter ■Cook vegetables in water until done with bay leaf, salt and pep per. Remove vegetables to warm place and reserve bouillon. Clan fish, and boil in bouillon, either whole 01 * cut in individual portions, for ten minutes. Remove fi'sih to platter and garnish with the cooked vegetables. Brown butter and pour over fish.
