Why? What is arresting our attention? There is a .com munist orator who is addressing the people in one of the cities of Soviet land. A mass of people is listening to him, or maybe they are merely standing there and weighing different thoughts in their minds ? We are trying hard to read the minds of these people, mostly women, at the photo. W-e wish to guess what they might be thinking of at the moment. Still we can't find the answer to our imagined queries. W-e are dumfounded by the muteness of their countenances. They are d-epriv-ed of the semb lance o-f their personal identity. They are mute, staring i.n stupor, and all seem to look alike, the young and the old ones. Are tihey really so similar, spiritually dead ? Amid the grey mass of faces in like kerchiefs (the garments also stress the spiritual trait of the wearers), one female face stands out, it rather expresses a desper ate tenacity which seems to over come the outer situpor. This par ticular face is perhaps denoting the thoughts O'f those inanimate creatures that are pretending to grieve over Stalin. Are they real ly at rthe bottom of their hearts “despairing” over the death of the man who deprived them of everything human, who became the despot over their animal “to be or not to be” ? Or may be they are lamenting and shedding their last tears for 'their own broken and frustrated liv-es, as well as of their children, husbands, brothers and parents? Their stunned mute ness will tell it. Let us hearken to it heed fully. N. P. Ukrainian organization in the Western Hemisphere, was held in Detroit, Michigan. Delegates from 14 states attended. The UiNWLA, as is well known, was founded in 1925 in New York. At the present time it -embraces 63 branches with more than 5,000 members.
