OUR ENGLISH COLUMN UKRAINIAN WOMEN AT THE MMM CONGRESSES The war blasted many a prin ciple and slhook moral foundations of human kind. That’s why lead ing* circles were engaged in the endeavors to restore these essen tials. And since the family forms the -basic cell of society, an es pecial attention had 'been paid to it. In 1947 the Civic and Social Feminine Union had called a -con gress under the slogan “The mo ther, artisan of human progress in the world to 'be readatpted.” A re port showed the difficulties a wo man had to face in t'he accomp lishment oif iher maternal, kindred and social duties, and it was de cided that, given the importance of t'he problem raised, a world as sociation s'hould be formed to find satisfactory solutions. The World Movement of Mothers (MMM) was founded. The Ukrainian delegation took part already in the first MMM congress. The League of Ukrain ian Women of France had sent as its delegates- Mrs. Pisnyachevska, Mrs. Krushelmitska, Mrs. Deieha- kivska and M-iss Markivna. On April 28, 1947 an Ukrainian dele gate >had described in a ibrief add ress the exploitation of the mo ther 'behind the Iron Curtain and the conditions of Ukrainian mo thers in DP camps. There also had appeared there a Byelorus sian delegate who podnted out the evils of totalitarian regime. The founders of the movement immediately set to work. Their firs-t act wass the establishment of the Mother's Chart. This clear, deeply studied document shows the conditions, in which the mo ther in a family should be brought to play the immense moral, intel lectual, social, economic and legal role to which she is entitled in hu man society. The publication of this document was a great suc- cesfs. Yet in order to render the slo gans of Mother’s Chart effectual, it was necessary to carry out a great work. MMM had been par ticipating in the activities of UNESCO and UN AC as well as in the International Labor Con ference. Two years after, the or ganization was accepted as a Con sultative Member of the Social and Economic Council of ONU. Nationality committees had been formed by MMM so as to collect materials on the status of the mother in every country. The committees are composed o«f wo men working in their own name or in the name of the associations. Thus the Ukrainian. MMM com mittee had been organized when in 1950 the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organiza tions (WPUWO) became a mem ber oif MMM. The WPUWO cre ated for this purpose a special Educational Committee which is studying the role of the Ukrain ian. mother. It is presided over by Mrs. Nadia Iszczuk, and Mrs. Helen Lototsky, the vice-presi dent of WPUWO, is representing the Ukrainian women on the board of the MMM. The first .stage -of the action of MM'M pertained to the situation of the mother. The problems are various fsalarv, half time work, lodging) and thev also varv in different countries as this was shown at the first international congress of the movement in 1950 on the subject “The Mother in Economic Life.” The Ukrainian women came forth with their two lectures which evinced the econo mic difficulties of the Ukrainian mother. Tho:se were the address es by Mrs. O. Sulima under head ing of “Economic predicament of the Ukrainian mother in her na tive land/* and by Mrs. S. Vityaz entitled “The result of mother’s incapacity to work for the family and society.” Also Dr. 01. Pisny achevska elucidated the economic hardness of the Ukrainian mother in emigration. The congress of 1950 cpllected a great deal of material and show ed the way to continued action. There appeared a necessity to work out tihe educational task of the mother. The next congress is being prepared under this slogan. In the meantime the nationality committees were expanding their work. They had to -qp
e with dif ficulties which vary in each case according to a nationality. The lot of Ukrainian women was pecu liar. A great mass of them in Uk raine, suppressed arbitrarily by bolshevik .regime, are carrying on a hard struggle for their physical existence, for their -educational prestige. Many Ukrainian women emigrants are facing the possibi lity of new resettlemen'f and are wrestlin'g for their influence in shaping the character o.f the gene ration. There -still remains a large number of Ukrainian mothers who were left behind in Western Europe as hard core emigrants, and who only exist in the camps without beinig able to perform their educational task. The Educational Committee of WPUWO took these conditions under consideration while prepar ing for the MMM congress in Brussels. The problems were pic tured in the lectures entitled “Tihe educational course of the Ukrain ian mother in her native country” (by J. Pisareva), and “Education al difficulties of an Ukrainian mo ther emigrant” (by I. Petriv). Mrs. Natalie Hladiy, a member of the Ukrainian delegation, read these elaborations and then com mented upon them in the course of discussion. U K R A I N I A N W O M A N
