saga of the sea, we were struck by three outstanding aspects; the literary skill and sheer poetry of words, the accuracy of scientific details, and the ma'gic and mys tery of the sea. Miis;s Garlson has taken a sub ject wjhiiidh could be, and has been butchered by force of technical terms and dull language. She has woven a net of words that cap tures h e r readers and keeps them caught. The possibility of drown ing in a whirl-pool of technicali ties is practically nil. The smooth ness and balance of her presenta tion is an absolute de'Wght. Facts and figures presented arc the latest available data, some of it being published for the first time. Miss Cars'on has personally taken part in oceanographic ex peditions and has engaged in deep sea diving. She has spoken to men of the sea, from university geolo gists to whaling captains. She has left no stone, or should we say shell, unturned in the search for additional information and knowledge on the sea; the least explored region on earth. Not only are we given the op portunity to read of the moun tains and islands which at one time or another have intruded up on the surfaoe of the ocean, but also of the life in the sea, past and present. Through geologic and archeologic discoveries we can understand the beginnings of ocean life and thus open the way to an understanding of life on land. The third and perhaps most am azing aspect of this book was the wealth of “sea magic.” Was there an Atlantis ? How were the White Cliffs of Dover formed? How oan whales dive to depths o!f 1500 feet and more? All these and many more questions are iogicalily and understandably an swered. Perhaps the most baffling prob lem of oceanography is the ques- ♦X»*!* *1* *1* «!♦ *!♦ *1* ♦»* ♦!« •> •> л Вже появився в розпро дажі 4-тий том ДІТИ ЧУМАЦЬКОГО ШЛЯХУ Докії Гуменної виданий накладом та зу силлям авторки ЦІНА $2.50 Замовляти в централі СУА LETTERS ТО THE EDITOR 6326 Hanson Avenue Detroit 10, Mich. The club is contributing a copy of “Spirit of Flame” to the ldbra- tion of the “phantom bottom.” Modern radar equipment has proven the existence of a mov able layer of some sort; some thing which lies deep in the “sun less sea” during the day and moves with thie coming of night. Several theories have been form ulated, but which one is true? As you become steeped in this fascin ating volume of ocean lore you'll ask yourself this and many other questions. Editor’s Note—We welcome comments on this column, and will accept reviews of books which, you think enjoyable and readable. ries of the following Universities : Wayne University, University of Michigan. Plans are now being formulat ed to augment the club's past program which included learning to design pysanky, Ukrainian em broidery for the Ukrainian booth at the International Institute’s World Markets, presentation of a concert honoring the memory of Olena Teliha, sponsored showing of a color film on Ukrainian Christmas customs and lectures, participation in civic events and drives, fund-raising through bin gos and original Minstrel Show productions. At the December meeting, Rev. Fr. Lazar of St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church gave an interest ing talk with an inspiring’ mes sage, the theme beiiing the Chris topher movement as introduced in Fr. James Keller’s book “You Oan Change tlhe World.” Follow ing our business meeting and Fr. Lazar’s talk, a tea reception was held for Fr. Lazar and the new members. In January we held our annual Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Hayes. It was a very suc- cesful social with exchanging of gifts and sitnging Ukrainian Christmas carols. For the next issue we’ll try to get together some personality sketches and personal notes with the long-range goal being to for ward in the future an article on Olena Teliha.
