A CHALLENGE One year ago there appeared on this page a message to Junior Leaguers from our National President Mrs. Helen Lototsky. Writing on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women’s League our president directed a message of challenge and warn ing to us, the future senior mem bers of the League. As we look upon the past year let us see how we have accepted and met this challenge in our individual branches. Following the outline set down by Mrs. Lototsky on the Program Development through National and Local Committees we come upon the first standing commit tee which is the Organizational Division. What has your chapter done to enlarge the membership of your group? Are you seeing to it that all the Ukrainian “Ameri can girls and young women are invited to become active mem bers of your group? Or are you content to go along with your present membership not bother ing about the young women growing up in yo-ur community? New blood can do a lot for an organization. Check and see if there is someone you have over looked who is eligible for mem bership in the League. The second division i!s that of Educational activities. Is your club just a social gathering? Or do you feel that as responsible American citizens one of your primary obligations is to develop yourself to your greatest capaci ties, in an attempt to serve your family and country as well as you can ? Plan some meetings where the main feature is a gues’t lec turer or an inter-origanizatfonal debate whidh will help you solve some of the problems which you meet in today's complicated and difficult living. Home economists, librarians, financial councilors, high-school guidance specialists are ready and willing to speak to groups such as ours. If you plan programs like this, your branch meetings will become high-'spots in the community calender. The next important feature in our President’s message was the Magazine. When was the last time your branch secretary drop ped us a line to let us know what you are doing in your commun ity? Does your branch boast 100 per cent subscription to “OUR LIFE” ? It should! Did you write to your Senator either for or against the Pechan KHOCXKOOODOOGOOW YOU CAN SAVE SOMEBODY’S LIFE For your next meeting have everyone meet at the local Red Cross Blood Cen ter. Does that sound silly? It’s not. The need for blood becomes greater every day. Men in Korea are praying that you donate at least a pint of blood to save their lives. The Red Cross begs you to supply this precious life-fluid as often as you can. The operation is very sim ple and completely painless. You suffer mo after effects if you are healthy, and it takes no more than one hour to complete this act of mercy. Enough about how easy it is. The boys out there didn’t go to fight because it was easy or convenient and they aren’t dying because they have found it simple. It’s your serious obligation and duty to donate blood for the men who are fighting for you. Anything you might plan for your next meeting will not be as important as this, so t'ake the time to donate a pint of blood. You’ll be sav ing someone’s life. Bill? This legislation, if passed, will have a great effect on your children's education. It should be important to you. Every day leg islation which directly affects you is being discussed in the Congres sional sessions and the represen tatives are more than willing to listen to the wishes and opinions of groups like ours. You as citi zens can influence directly wdiat goes on in Washington, especially through a united organization. Mrs. Lototsky’s final word was on Public Relations. Are your meetings for members only? Or do yon invite your American friends to learn about the contri butions of Ukrainians to the Am erican culture and way of life? If you coordinate your activities with oither civic groups, you will do yourself and them a great ser vice. Your organization will be stronger, more useful and more popular! Take one meeting to discuss the problems set before you' by your National President. Go through your program with earnest thor oughness. Evaluate, criticize, judge, and discuss wihat you, as the future leaders of the Ukrain- ian-Ameniicans have done and will do. Let us know what your organi zation is contributing to this pro gram. BOOK REVIEW The following book review was written by Luba Holowaty, a member of Branch 52 in Phila delphia. Luba is now attending the University of Pennsylvania, and majoring in Education. The Sea Around Us, by Rachel L. Carson. Oxford University Press. 216 pages. The mysteries of miracle drugs, radar and the atom bomb all seem rather minute when compared to the cavernous depths of the sea, or so it would seeim while reading this “pearl of the deep,” “The Sea Around Us.” As we read this enthralling
