THE WOMEN SPEAK A copy o*f the following letter was sent to Rep. Marguerite Cbitrdh df Ill'mois. This letter LETTERS TO THE EDITOR March, 1952 Branch 61 Detroit, Midi. Dear Editor, We would like to report that our girls were greatly honored and harjpy to have Mrs. Lototsky visile us while she was in Detroit. We welcomed and presented her with a corsage. We enjoyed the talk she gave and her helpful ad vice. After t'he busines's affairs were finished, we served tea and cakes, and had a wonderful time. We would also like to report that we had an election of officers for the year 1952 and the results are as follows: Sophie Siehda, President; Mary Heshczuk, Vice-President; Helen Stanizewski, Treasurer; Sophie Czarneeki, Secretary. Our club is also having a drive for mew members which we hope will be very successful. Yours truly, Mary Heshczuk * Fe'bruaiy, 1952 Branch 37 Detroit, Mich. Dear M bs Kulchycky, Our congratulations and sincer- est good wishes for success in your newly appointed role of ed itor for the Junior page. Although our branch is not Junior we do lean towards the English usiage since a majority of our members are second genera tion Ukrainians. Being perhaps one of the smallest branches our activities ane not spectacular. We have dwelled on ihe cultural phase of the work, which is dif ficult to carry out. It is alKvays easier to get a large representa tion for an evening of fun than for a round table discussion. Nevertheles's we shall keep on trying. Our January participation was meetinig wuth Mrs. Uofcotsiky. Jan uary was also a very sad month for us as we lost one of our out standing leaders and members, Mrs. Julia Shustaktewich. She was our constant inspiration and bent our efforts towards the purposes and aimis o.f the League, a-s well as towards general c*ivi.c partici- was signed by more than 600 wo men, and copies of it wene sent to all women Senators and Repre sentatives in the United States. A copy was also sent to President Truman. UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA Branch 52, Chicago, Illinois March 7, 1952 s Hon. Rep. Marguerite S. Church House Office Building Washington, D. C. Dear Rep. Church, We, the undersigned, as well as the attached petitioners, request that this letter be read into the Congres sional Record as our protest against Russian enslavement of Ukrainian women, as well as women of other nationalities, behind the !(ron Cur tain. All women behind the Iron Cur tain will be £orced to celebrate March 9, 1952, as a day designated in honor of equal rights and freedom for women. This mockery is typical of the communists, who set aside this day .for propaganda purposes only. We are well aware of the fact, that the Russians will use this day to slander all countries in which women pation. We deeply feel her depart ure. On the 28th of February, our Chapter has arranged an evening specifically devoted to works of Lesya Ukrainka, the topic being “What does Yes у a Ukrainka mean to me.” Surely each member has gathered some inspiration, some line of thouight from her wrorks over a period oif ti.nue, and this was the time to express it. We are also planning t-о con tinue oiir plan of cooperating with local branches i-n exhibiting the lovely authentic costumes at the International Institute Hall of Nations. Currently there is on display a beautiful costume from county Oif Zalishchyki, Ukraine. Wre shall also have a display of Easter eggs. Fraternally yours, A. Volker, pres. Mary Hradlowsky, sec’y truly enjoy the fruits of freedom and equality. We are further aware of the fact, that Moscow will again brazenly pre varicate and proclaim that only in the Soviet Union do women live in freedom and equality. We are further aware, that Moscow will falsely inform the millions of women enslaved in the Soviet prison of nations that the women living in the United States of America are held in bondage, beaten, tortured, and not allowed even the basic hu man rights. We women jiving in the United States of America, native born, im migrant, and refugees from the tyr anny of Moscow, resolve that these truths be known: (a) That in these United States of America, no freedom is denied us. (b) That in these United States of America, we have the right to vote— to vote for whomever we desire, without fear of persecution by our government. (c) That in these United States of America, we have the right to choose our own manner of worship, to work however and wherever we desire, whether in offices, factories, or on farms, if we so desire; and to raise our children as our hearts dictate us to, and not according to the dictates of our government. We wish to convey our sympathy to the women behind the Iron Cur tain, because: (a) They are permitted to vote only under the dictates of the tyrants who are the oppressors of their lands. (b) They have had their children forcibly taken from them, to be brought up as the communist gov ernment commands — in government nurseries, schools, and concentration camps. (c) They are compelled to deny the existence of Almighty God, and must worship Stalin, under threat of death. In conclusion, we wish to inform the enslaved women, behind the Iron Curtain, that all American women pray for the downfall of Russian communism and imperialism, and for the early restoration of true freedom to all women in the Ukraine and in the other enslaved nations behind the Iron Curtain. Respectfully submitted, Mrs. A. B. Fedunyak President Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
