КРОК УПЕРЕД НА КУЛЬТУРНОМУ ПОЛІ (На маргінесі видакнв “8+irit mt FI шт*Г Лесі Українки) Кожен, хто хоч трішки обзнайом- леинй Із університетською практико» на американському суходолі, ш е , які вешисі труднощі треба побороти ви кладачеві української літератури се ред англомовного студенства, а зо крема серед нашої молоді народже ної в Америці Найбільш дошкульно відчувається недостача добрнх пере кладів українських авторів. Ми не ка жемо всіх, але головніших, отих, яки ми гордиться українська література й які безпечерно належать не тільки до українського, але й світового куль турного пантеону. Підписаному доводиться са*ме вести курс української літератури в Літній Школі ОУКО в Манітобському Уні верситеті. Кляса: 24 усміхнені облич чя з Америки й Канади уважливо слідкують за кожним словом, пильно нотують основні відомості про етапи розвитку української літератури, дбайливо завчають в оригіналі Шев ченків „Вечір44 напамять, та пооди нокі ,долоті слова44 з творів наших письменників. На жаль — курс триває тільки шість тижнів, двічі на тиждень лекції літератури, разом 12 годин. І тут саме приходимо до неоціне- ного подарунку, що його зробив „Со юз Українок Америки44 англомовному й українському світові, видавши пе реклади поезій і драм Лесі Українки пера II Канді п. н. 44 Spirit of Flame”. Це великий крок уперед для введення Лесі Українки в західні культурні сфери. Це конкретне й речеве пере конування чужинців і своїх, що з різ них причин (про які тут не говори мо) не читають по-українськи, про високі етичні й естетичні вартості української літератури, це аргумент „ад окульос44, що українська літера- тзгра має своїх велетнів, про яких т. зв. Захід не знав зовсім, чи знав замало. Власне такої книжки, як “Spirit of Flame” недоставало. Є вже перекла ди Шевченка, є переклади Франка на англійську мову; в 1947 й останньо в 1950 pp. вийшли переклади „Слова о Полку Ігореві44; є добрі переклади українських народних пісень п. Ф. Лайфсей, що саме викінчує англій ський переклад дум. Не було по-ан глійськи Лесі Українки. Не пробито було досі вікна в широкий світ для тієї української письменниці, що була найбільш „світовою* в тематиці й іде ях. Від Палестини, почерез Грецію. Україну, Італію, Еспанію, Шкотію, аж до американської „пущі44 ширяла во на на крилах фантазії й інтуїції. І власне західному читачеві, виховано му на Шексяірі. Метерігінкові, Гавпт- манові й іи., легко сприймати ідейний і мистецький світ Лесі Українки. Тнмто нова збірка перекладів Лесі Українки — це один із наріжних ка менів для будови в культурі заходу. Це те, чого нам дуже бракувало при літературно-мистецьких взаєминах із англомовним світом. Це врешті один із важливих здобутків на полі осві- домлення українсько-американської молоді про духові здобутки „Старого Краю44. Т ба думати, що українська спіль нота на американському терені витяг не висновок із появи цієї книжки. На нашу думку, не повинно бути ані од нієї публічної бібліотеки в більших місцевостях Америки й Канадо, де б не було цього видання. Зокрема ж університетські бібліотеки, де збира ється „славістику*, повинні мати цю книжку. Бо вона вповні заслуговує на це як змістом, так і зовнішньою формою. Ярослав Рутшцьккй.
