Helen Mural SOMETHING MORE THAN SOCIAL ACTIVITIES We American Ukrainian youth join a Ukrainian organization for the most part, because our friends belong and everyone seems to have a wonderful time at the meetings and social functions. We join for fun and fun we have sing ing ‘‘Mala ya moozha peyaka,” and dancing kolomeyka with “na- shee” girls and boys. Consciously 01 * unconsciously we Jr. League girls fulfill the first aim of the Ukr. Nat’l Women’s League when we join together in social groups. As the constitution of our League points out “the aim of the UNWLA shall be to organ ize women of Ukrainian birth and descent, living in the United States of America, for SOCIAL ACTIVITIES.” But just as our affiliation with the UNWLA does n’t begin and end with singing and dancing, neither does the pur pose of the League begin and end with SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. If wre read a little further into the constitution we find that we unite and organize for “social, educa tional, civic and humanitarian co operation and activities, for mu tual aid, for cultural and humani tarian assistance to Ukrainians outside the United States and for organized participation in Amer ican, Ukrainian and international women’s actions.” As the saying goes, that in cludes a lot of territory! Naturally we all recognize that it is through social channels of or ganizational activities that an in dividual can be directed more easily to the more serious prob lems, purposes and deals of a giv en gmup. It is undenstod that at first new members (and I am guilty along with many others) will find interest only in the so cializing element of the Wom en’s League. This does not mean that these girls lack depth in their thinking, nor does it mean that these of us who see more to the League than a good place to meet and to gossip once a month should lose patience. Nor does thiis fact relieve us, however, from our ob ligation to show and to teach these newcomers the real signific ance of membership in our organi zations. Gradually we must indoctrinate these uninformed girls with the historical development of Ukrain ian women organizations which dates as far back as 1884. We must tell the inspiring story of the circumstances that led to the organization o-f Soyuz Ukrainok in May, 1925 in New York City after the International Council of Women met in Washington, D. C. P>v explaining the scope of the National Women’s League, its achieve mien ts and what it hopes to achieve we must invariably in stil a sense of pride and under standing will come the desire for something more than a gossip once or twice a month. Hand in hand with this “recog nition,” comes, the matter of sup port of the National League. “In unity there is strength.” The Na tional League is as strong as your Jr. Branch, my Jr. Branch and all memiber Branches will allow it to be. As Jr. members of the UNWLA that does not infer that we are not old enough, mature enough to assume our share of the re sponsibility for the well-being of our organization. It is up to us, as well as the older Branches, to help support our magazine, to help in such a worthy enterprise as the publishing in English of the works of our Ukrainian writers, and to cooperate generally in all of the undertakings of the League. At present the League needs financial aid fo.r “Our Life.” As with all non-profit newspapers, “Our Life” runs in the red and must rely 011 your contributions for its existence. If your treasury is small or your Branch is strug gling through ‘the period of infan cy, your national organization does not expcct to jeopardize the running efficiency oif your group by draining your treasury. But there is a way if there is a will. You can simply give a bridge party, dance or any social event and the proceeds contribute to the Press Fund of “Our Life.” We ha've asked and now we Costume from Ukraine, County Pidlasha, worn by Mrs. Myro- slava Hordynsky, Verona, N.
